    Boots for big calves?

I went to the bike show today hoping they might have a better selection of boots to try on all in one place, the selection wasnt bad, but no-one seems to make any for anyone with slightly more robust legs. One salesman confidently predicted that they had some that would definately fit but they got nowhere near.

So, the question is does anyone know of any resonable boots (only looking around the £100 mark to begin with as I will shortly be getting a Vara 125 once I find one) that dont fail to zip up past the ankle on someone with 17.5" calves?

Ankle boots do fit OK but I what are peoples views on what makes a good boot (new to biking so open to advice!) Do I need high boots or ankle boots resonable?

Alternatively I could stop cycling and sit still for 3 years in the hope muscle wastage will help in the search.

I've just bought TCX Infinity boots and on my relatively normal legs there seems to be plenty of scope to take a bigger calf as they rely on velcro and buckles. These boots won Ride best buy and although they are a bit more that you were hoping to spend but they should last you for years. Got mine at Forth Gear near Edinburgh have them on offer at £166 (RRP £208 )

Ah whoops, thanks for the ideas so far, I just thought I should check and I seem to have grown, now 19" (last measured a few years ago...) Will have a hunt for a local shop that stocks the boots you mention and see how I get on

Hein Gerricke do what's reported to be the same boot. It's known as the Rallye GTX II. There should be a branch near you.

    Hein Gericke (UK) Ltd.

Sorry to be frivolous, but every time I saw the thread title I pictured baby cows in boots!!

I had a similar problem & settled on Alpinestar Roam boots. Couldn't get any zipper jobbies to do up, but these are zip free & not too bad for wide feet either. Can be found for £100. As regards their waterproofing, I'll let you know in a couple of weeks.

The velcro flap has about 5" of overlap so loads of room for adjustment (mine has about 3.5" once on). I wear mine inside my bike pants as theres not much room the other way and the boot jams against the tank when stood up on the pegs. Because the two parts of the velcro strap are now offset the one with the teeth on the outer flap will rub against your leg so get some long socks that'll go up to your shin - I use Hein Gericke Falco (£10)

    Re: Boots for big calves?

    Hey,

have the same problem. The cross boots from Alpinestars Tech 3 work really well. Dont try the Tech 6 /10 or whatever others there are from Alpinestars. They are way smaller. Some other cross boots work as well, since they are adjustable. You should try them on in a store though, since some are really tight others arent.

I use the cross boots every day not only offroad. After you get used to it, they are quite comfortable. Great support and protected my legs on numerous occasions. But they are not exactly the price you are looking for. Maybe you could get something like that used.

I personally prefer the high cross boots to normal boots and shoes, always gives you a secure stand.

When I picked up biking a year ago, I was afraid using the cross boots in the beginning since I doubted I would be able to shift gears and brake properly. I walked around in them for a couple of days to get used to them and since then I never wore anything else anymore.
