I'm looking to mount a 2 meter handheld radio, possibly through an Intaride RP1 kit on my Transalp 600 (96)

As there's a lot of different radios it might be better to suggest which one especially as they all mount differently

The most efficient way though is to either do a semi-open faced mount which the radio sits in and a velcro strap over the top, or if you want a waterproof mount then there are a few boxes/bags that can be handlebar/frame mounted..

    Re: Ham Radio On Bikes

I've not seen that model of intercom, but it looks similar to Autocom from the web site, so should be straight forward. You need to make sure you handheld switches the TX and TX, as most intercoms run a "high / low" switch, and some of the new radios are using resistance change to switch as the sets become more "computer with a radio engine" based. Certainly some of the newer commercial kit I've seen is moving this way. Most ham sets do just use a basic PTT switch so you should be OK.

The 600 won't be affected too much by RF interference - the 700 worries me even with a PMR446 set (very low power) , so its on the back of the bike ! The average HAM or commercial hand set will run 5 watts.

The other option is to use Bluetooth. There's a pretty universal box from RPF-Comms called the Talksafe Ranger (www.rpf-comms.com) and they have leads for most kit. There's a couple of articles re bikes on the web with these.

As for mounting the radio, there's a number of people who make Aquapack type bags for protection. I've seen some where an external antenna has been mounted on the bike, and the radio put in the tail pack or tank bag as it doesn't need to be vertical then.

Thanks for the info guys, I've Had the Intaride 446 system for 5 years now with ( touch wood ) no problems, I had it mounted on a Diversion 900 previously, whichever handheld I end up with will probably be mounted on a Ram mount inside a Marine grade waterproof sealed cover. as to the antenna make and siting, I will have to get more info.

I would rather eat the Ham, it would be better than making a radio out of it.

If you set them to search they should both find each other and link.
