    Chain Links

    Hi

I have just got a new chain, came with 2 sets of links, one with the spring clip (obvious how) and one that is meant to be peaned over to hold it on. (Never done one before)
How do you pean it over?
Well I asume it need to be peaned over, may be it just presses on?
Any comments welcome, well about chain links that is, not about my personal hygene.

Rick theres a variety of chain riveting/breaker tools on the page, My advice is go for the heavier duty/more expensive ones, the cheaper options tend not to last very long at all , I'm think of running my replacement chain with the split link, not sure if this is advisable but I know a number of riders that do

Yes it needs to be peaned over. There are 2 ways to do this - with a chain tool or with a big hammer and a suitable drift thing. There are also proper guidelines for how much peaning is needed in terms of the torque applied through the chain tool, the width of the pins after peaning or the diameter of the head after peaning....... Me, I have a tool and just keep winding it in (back off from time to time) until it the pin good and turned over, but not clamping the link so tight it won't move. It is purely subjective, judgemental and based on huge experience of having done this 3 times so far

Get a motion pro tool set - about £30-40. Try M&P or the UK distributors Madison.

    Good luck

Maybe not then, On mine it says not for use over 650cc, but surely this is subjective eg. a 650 Hornet is a diffrent beast to a 650 XR is a different beast to a XRV750

Ok, there appears to be a difference between DID and Regina chains.
Tools for one, don't do the other chain. Oh joy.

One thing i didn't know until last week it's illegal to use a split link on road bikes over 60bhp also illegal for a bike shop to repair a puncture in a tube for you god knows why, something to do with the rubber cement and the rubber of the tube.

I did mine a couple of weeks ago i had this tool bought for me for a xmas present from my mother....

You will need something like this as th eholes in the side plate are marginally smaller than the pins so thplate will need to be pressed on..

the tool come with the plate to press the side plate on and an anvil. The pins ain the chain link are longer than th eother link you then press them to flare the top of the pins and you get something that looks something like this....

The tool i got cost £40 from my dealer

Which dealer did she buy it from?
Was it a did or a regina chain?

The chain and sprockets were a genuine honda kit with a DID chain got them from david silver £112ish inc vat and delivery.

The tool came from my local shop and that was Anton Paris Motorcycles. I have used the motion pro unity before but find them a bit flimsy for large chains and the pins can snap quite easily. To remove an old chain your best best is to grind the pin heads off then used a screwdriver to remove the side plate and take the link out. Only use the chain tool for closing and sealing the chain. If you need to shorten the chain put it on the bike mark the link you need to remove then grind the head of that pin and use a normal pin punch to remove it
