    ciggie socket jump leads

Howdie folks, I know a lot has been written about jump starting your bike, but after a mini search couldn't find any info about the jump leads that have a ciggie adapter one end and normal croc clips at the other.
    Any experiences/ recommendations out there?

I have a big battery in my garage to power some basic lighting but needed it the other day to jump my 97 TA, and the clips swamped my terminals and I didn't like the way they were treating the wires around there, so if I could keep some that I could just plug into my assessory socket and have the clips just on the big batt that might work (should I ever need to do it again)

I know you can get the bike leads with smaller clips, but the ciggie socket way was also remove the need for panel removal etc

Bets bet would be to buy the bits seperate of flea bay or Maplins and solder the conection yourself with a longish lead, best bet crockadile clips to connect to car`s etc and permenant lead connected to your battery with a fuse of coarse to protect Bike electrics.

beats pushing, I have a permenant connection under seat to a ciggy lighter socket for air pump and "owt else" i feel like powering up.

When you jump start a car dont you just connect !positive to battery and neg to earth/chassy NOT direct to Battery earth to stop you frying the electric ECU etc.

Awaiting a electic person who knows their stuff

    Re: ciggie socket jump leads

To jump start any car or bike you will need leads capable of passing a couple of hundred amps while the bike is cranking and a fag lighter's guts wont cut it. You'll just end up melting something. That's why jump leads are as thick as your finger with huge clips on the end.

If it's for charging using a modern battery charger or conditioner then as long as the output of the charger is within the specs of your fag lighter (usually 5-10A) then you should be ok but disconnect it before you press the starter button.

There is a jump set that uses the Accessory socket, it uses a control box to do the magic. You just plug it into the master ( Running Vehicle) and the Slave ( Dead Vehicle) and leave for a couple of minutes before trying to start.
You could try buying some 60 Amp wire and smaller crocodile clips to fit the bike. As mentioned above one goes to the +ve of the battery and one goes to the bike frame.

I have an old heavy duty 3 core extension cord. I have cut that up and carry it around on the trail. Do you think the core is big enough to jump between two trail bikes? I don't want to carry something too big because of the limited space

It was this kind of purpose made giggery pokery I was thinking of, like 450 gasgas I don't want to carry a load of bulky gear around on my travels, the wires from my ciggie/assessory socket do look a little weedy, so I'm still unsure.

DIY sounds okay, but sourcing some beefy cable/clips etc might prove just as pricey as buying some purpose built.

    Thanks for all your ideas

The box stumpy mentions is really just a current limiting device to limit the current (doh) that can pass from one battery to the other. It really is little more than using one battery to charge another and not jump start it which implies the full starting current comes from the other battery. The reason you have to leave connected for a while is to give the flat battery time to charge from the good one.

It will work but I would expect a few minutes to be something like 15 and even then I would suspect the flat battery would have to be in tip top condition. In other words it wont rescue you if your battery is shagged but it might work had you left your grips or aux lights on and flattened your battery.

You could make something similar with a few pounds worth of bits from Maplins

Forget about the clamps, the terminals already have "clamps" with the bolt that clamps the eyelet to the terminal. Just squeeze the extension cord copper between the bolt and the terminal and tighten up the bolt.
