    Brake lines

(Mods: this is not a technical query. It's about human behaviour. Hence in Chatter)

My car is 27 years old and has the same brake lines it had when it came out of the factory in South Africa. I have never thought to replace them and have never done so in any car I have owned.

Turning to bikes and from time to time I read the wondrous effects of braided brake hoses and/or the desirability of renewing the brake lines, on nearly new bikes.

    Why the difference?

Is it just the joy of farkling...?

    Re: Brake lines

Braided brake lines do have a technical effect on the braking of the bike, they expand less than modern brake lines so more of the braking force is guided towards the calliper..

It's nothing to do with riding style apart from the fact that it improves the brakes and most of the time it's just the simple fact that OEM hoses tend to be crap

    Re: Brake lines

I suspect that if you were to change the brake lines on your car you would find a difference in braking performance.

It's not a case of whether we can fix it or not - it's more a case of how fixed would you like it?

    Re: Brake lines

The effects of a bikes brake lines being in direct sun light may have some bearing on the performance.
UV light destroys most synthetic materials over a period of time.
Cars have mostly metal brake lines with just small pieces of flexible connections to allow for the suspension, all of which are hidden under the bodywork / wheel arches.

    Re: Brake lines

I used to run braided lines on my Escorts and Capri's. The brakes were never up to the job as standard (especially if you more then double the engines BHP) when used it used to make the pedal a lot firmer, the fade was less and the braking was more instant due to less pedal travel.
