xl600r how do i set float level?

hi guys, this might sound a stupid qestion to some of you, but how do i set the float level on my 84 xl600r? the overflow/drain screws are in as tight as i can get them, but the overflow tubes/breather pipes still dribble a little amount of petrol when the engine is running, this tells me the float level is incorrect, [which could be part of my bog, or reving high when throttle released?] my manual dosent realy explain the procedure too good, it says...[adjust the float level by carefully bending the float arm until the float tip just contacts the float valve] [float level 18mm] there is no diagram or nothing else, i dont have a clue as ive never had to do this before, which part is the float arm? which part is the float tip? i now which is the float valve, but from [where] to [where] do i measure 18mm? and can i do this with them on the bike? if someone could help me how to do this [talk me through step by step] you will be greatly appreciated hope someone can help, thanks in advance

More than likely a piece of grit or such in the float valve assembly as the float would have to be miles out for fuel to reach the overflow. Strip it and give it a good clean and blow through with compressed air.

I don't think there will be an o-ring in the float valve. Usually the end of the float valve itself is soft rubber and that seals against a drilling in the body of the carb. It's also spring loaded so check the spring moves freely.

Float hight is measured from the gasket face of the carb to the top of the float with the valve shut BUT NOT COMPRESSING THE SPRING IN THE FLOAT VALVE so lay the carb on its side so the float lightly rests on the valve and closes it without compressing the spring in the valve.

As I say more likely to be muck or if you are unlucky a damaged pointy tip on the float valve. Rotating the valve through 180 degrees may make things better.... or worse, but if it's damaged a replacement valve is the only long term solution.
