Hi. I have to charge up an unsealed battery from my new Dakar but there is hardly any acid in there. I know you top up with distilled water, but is this alone ok or do I nead to add some acid? Cheers.

If it's a new battery, it should have been supplied with acid (and instructions on adding it). If it's an old battery,I imagine some of the acid's been lost, either by spillage or by evaporation, so topping up with distilled water only won't be a good idea. You'd need to top up with acid, but how much, and what strength (Specific gravity) to use .... and where to source it, is anybody's guess. But if the battery's been very low on electrolyte, the plates will have dried out and probably become permanently damaged .... so the battery may well not be worth saving.![]()

Thanks hotbulb. It's an old battery and I agree with you, I'm guessing it's best just to plum for a new one.![]()
