Green Laning in Essex

Can anyone recommend any places to go green laneing in Essex (legally). I am an absolute novice so it would have to be easy routes.

CHAD - I note that you are in Wickford, do you know any good routes?

Hi Mark, can't help with advice of green lanes, but as an off-road novice (never done it!) I may be interested in hearing the results of this or joining you.

Let me look at the ole maps, and I'll get back to you. There are lots of good stuff in/around the Luton/Hitchin area, and further south. Herts. lanes are quite nice, but it depends on the tyres and willingness to scratch/bend bits.

I think you have a v. long along a beach byway, but it's not beginner or faint hearted freindly. You need to know tide times etc!! The Broomway, off Foulness Island.!!

From Chelsford, North West on A1060, then there are lots of Byways both right and left! Best bet is to go and see, check the signs either end for TRO status, then try it! (Never done these though, but would be up for an explore!!)

Mark, get yourself an OS map of the area, anything that's a BOAT is legal to ride.

As Yen may suggest, have a look for your local Trail Rider Fellowship group, these guys will know all your local routes, and will have a wealth of knowledge about all things laning.

The Broomway is only useable with M.O.D. permission and they don't give it. I've been on Foulness once with their permission and we got chased by a landrover just for looking at the part of the island where it comes ashore in between the bomb, shell and missile casings that have been dredged up and chained to stop them washing away again. They did mention they lost a Bedford lorry on it once after the driver and passengers abandoned it before the tide came in.

The OS landranger map for Harlow and Chelmsford pretty much shows all the legal BOATs you can ride in Essex.

No TROs there, most are easily doable on road tyres in the summer, some deep ruts though so take it easy.

Ta Da

Just found this thread.

I found some nice greenlanes near Coggeshall in Essex - off the A120, and then worked my way towards Braintree (Yens neck of the woods).

Sadly i've not had time to venture out any further yet but having looked on various maps, there are plently about - and some nice fords scattered about as well.

I'd be happy to come along for a ride - still got the dommi ready for duty the at's in bits at the mo and wont be ready until spring next year for a proper workout (tyres r right on the limit at the mo, and i've run out of tokens to do any more work just yet).

Not sure how the locals would feel if we all suddenly turned up - but could be fun
