    Sarn Helen

Just got back from a ride up through the Beacons with a mate, went N to S along the Ystradfellte road. Saw a group of enduro bikes head off down the northern section of what I now understand to be the Sarn Helen route. Me thinks shall I follow them... decided not to as I wasn't sure of the legality, or the rideability on a tranny.

Have read a few posts mentioning it and some parts are obviously passable by Fiesta! How about it; could I ride it all on the TA? Is it all legal? Should I try the shorter southern section first?

    Any help very welcome.
    Cheers
    David

    Dave,

there are parts of Sarn Helen that easily doable on your bike (It's been there before!!), other parts you will struggle if you haven't got the right tyres and big balls!

As for legality, buy a OS landranger map (160-Brecon beacons) will cover most of it. I've never been stopped on Sarn Helen although it has had seasonal TRO's put on it in the past.

    cheers, Bob.

Thanks Bob, should have guessed it might have been there before, sounds like another visit is in order.

I think the route is split by the minor road, is it worth doing one section first or is it just a case of seeing how you get on?

    Cheers

from the Ystradfellte road the northern section is the most difficult, lots of rocks some as big as footballs but you can do it if you take it easy.

from the same road the southern section is OK apart from thr river crossing if it's been raining a lot. Immediately after the river crossing are some rock steps which are 'interesting'

    cheers, Bob.
