The CHEC Hare and Hound events 2008 thread

    New website is here:

    http://www.chilternhillsclub.co.uk/

They are good events, friendly and fine for beginners. (On little bikes though.)

They are based in the "Chiltern" area, but people travel from Kent, Leicester etc to ride them.

Costs about £50 for a days riding, either 3 or 4 hours, normally in 2 sessions.

    Dates:
    round 1 =9th march,great billington
round 2 =6th april, venue to be confirmed
round 3 =11th may, venue to be confirmed
round 4 =8th june, venue to be confimed
round 5 =13th july, venue to be confirmed
round 6 =7th sept, venue to be confirmed

Hare and Hounds - an idea.

Hare and Hounds racing - a very brief and simple guide, 'cos thats how I like it!

This is aimed for riders wanting to take some first steps into competition, and is only my opinion of what is going on.

    Aim:
    1. Ride your bike for some hours around a course/track that may be between 3 and 30 or so km long. Depending on the event the difficulty of the course varies. CHEC is generally ok, although some short stretches may well make you think.
    2. Try and do as many laps as you can in the time allowed. Depending on the event, you are required to finish within a certian time, or must still be riding at a certian time. CHEC events are "within" time events, as such the DNF does not occur.
    3. (Ride for as much time as possible. DNF means "Did Not Finish", and is worse than 1 lap. DNFs do not get a "place".)
    4. Enjoy it. Move out of the way when its safe/fast to do so for faster riders, slower ones will move out of your way. (Eventually). Ignore anyone swearing. Most thank you!
    5. Chat lots, before, at lunch, and afterwards. Eat burgers and drink coffee.
    6. Remember to take some spares, and have enough petrol to finish the laps you start!
Virtually any bike is OK, don't be put off by the vast amount of really posh machinery about. Enjoy the smells, noises and atmosphere of being in the middle of up to 200 off road bikes!
We've done them on machines valued from £250, and done OK.

As Stan has said, making sure your machine can handle the punishment can enhance your riding time. It is a little () more intense than green lanes, there are not going to be horses or walkers and the 25mph vol. limit on the lanes is nonexistant.

I've competed on the Transalp, but it was a little hard, broke some bits on landings, but not last! Probably not advisable really.

Most of all, they are FUN events.
    Do it, you'll enjoy it.

    Re. the legalities:

For the CHEC events, no licence is required. No special insurance is required, but your bike will almost certianly NOT be covered, even if you are fully comp. It is wise to check any life insurance will still be valid, I needed to do a questionaire etc, small premium increase, and any medical insurance needs checking too. (we don't have that!).

The 3rd party insurance etc is in the entry fee.

Other events eg TBEC need an ACU licence, but you can get one when you join - ish £46 for the year, Enduro and Trials.
