Thinking about Wiltshire's (easy) trails in August

[EDIT] We've changed the date to Sunday 19 August. We'll meet at 10:30 am in the layby that's just off M4 Junction 18 (A46 Bath Road northwards towards Stroud).

Nothing firmly decided, but is anyone free for some easy trail riding in Wiltshire one weekend in August? 11, 12, 18, 19, 25, 26, 27 August are possible at the moment (though the last three are on the Public Holiday weekend so the routes may have more hikers than normal).

I know a few Byeways, but it would be great to have along someone with local knowledge of which Byeways are currently open and passable.

I'll be riding a Varadero, so we won't be tackling anything hard-core. If you are an off-road expert on an Enduro bike, you'll probably get bored! If it remains dry I think many trails are rideable on road/dual sport tyres like Anakees. If the weather deteriorates again you might be longing for something like TKC80s or K60s in short stretches.

Re: Thinking about Wiltshire's (easy) trails in August

Hi ..last weekend and the one before we were out on the ox drove and shaftesbury droves both overgrown and require full enduro knobblys ..tkc wont cut it..

But salisbury plain will be open the bank hoilday weekend and the gravel trails are fine for road tyres..but dont think off going off the gravel as its still very slippery and deep water in places..the ridge way is enduro only ..

But good news the Fosseway from castlecomb north is passable with caution in places..and the woody sections are fine but slow..we had full enduro`s on and had a faller ..

but 3 weeks of this weather and it should be fine..

Try Baftone or Boboneleg...I`m busy in Wales etc..

My KTM is in action again now Dave so I may be good for 18 or 19th. Tony could always do it on his newly acquired Fireblade

I was thinking that Fosse Way would be good. We did that some years ago and I was on full road tyres. One muddy, twisty down-slope caused a little clenching, as I recall.

So, Barftone: I've heard GSX-Rs make adequate trail bikes, let's see what a 'Blade can do, eh?

    18/19 August sounds good.

It looks like the best date is Saturday 18 August. [EDIT] Subsequently changed to 19 Aug [/EDIT] We'll meet at the layby that's just off M4 Junction 18 (A46 Bath Road northwards towards Stroud).

Tramp has put a post up on ABR about closures on the Plain, not sure how relevant it is to this outing, but worth a look.
