    Hi Edd,
    Hope you don't mind me contacting you, but I seem to be having the same problem with my '97 ex- army XR 250 as you had.
    The electrics are baffling me. It has all the road gear, lights, horn, indicators etc, but I Can't follow the wiring diagram because of it. It seems to have a cross between an xr and an xlr wiring.
    At the moment I can't even get it started. Did you get to the bottom of what that component is in the airbox with 6 wires on it? It seems to have contact breaker points, is this in lieu of a battery/ relays etc.
    I would very much appreciate any help you can give me.
