Sorry I've had to unban myself.
Why would anyone want one?
For me, it's bigger than the F650GS which I found too small, and a bit lacking in power. It's smaller and lighter than the AT which I find too top heavy off road (there's great benefits to having the fuel tank lower down).
It's a good ride height for me.
It's a very sexy looking bike......although that's obviously personal opinion.
Yes, it is expensive but it's German engineering. I have a VW Touareg and never have any problems with that either.
Downside- yet it is expensive but you are paying for the engineering. BMW have really taken on board the what people want and have provided it.
Another downside - owning a BMW motorbike. BMW bikers get a lot of bad press. As you are called on the GS forum, many of the biking fraternity do see BMW riders as T***ers. I'm sure some are, as are many other bikers.
Oh, and nobody nods to you if you ride a BMW.........................including other BMW riders.
Would I have one............................................YES if Stormforce8 hadn't insisted we finish the house first.

I agree 100%. As the writer of that article said, a lighter bike with ~ 85 bhp is a lot more use more of the time to more of the people. It's what the AT almost was, and why the kind of people who like that kind of thing have tended to stick with it. Big figures (like power and top end speed) are impressive, but how much of this time do you use 120 bhp or 140 mph? I'd rather had 120 mpg any day!!

This is my big issue too. It's supposed to 60mpg or 65? I can't remember. I am rarely going over 100mph and only then to push past some recalcitrant middle lane hogger. This looks like a good compromise.
I bet the slow low sped acceleration is as good as we get from our current older bikes.
I just have to find the money.

I must admit the looks of the black and yellow GS800 is very nice, one thing that did get me going from the GS to the Africa Twin before was the decrease in power. Handling wise there is nothing that I would not do on a Africa Twin if not more than what I would of done with my old GS.
The only reason I went back to BMW is my love for the boxer twin and let's face it there is no replacement for displacement as a good mate of mine always say. 1200cc of pure torque - that's the way I roll![]()
I think they say 65, but that might be higher if used more carefully. The current F650 can do 70 mpg...
Me too. I imagine Honda would have been selling the AT at what BMW will be putting these out at by now had they still been a current model. Hell, wasn't the list price around £6,000 at one point anyway? And that was a while ago...
