Can anyone make an MT50 quicker?

I'm asking for a mate who has bought his son an MT50

Without changing the gearing or skimming heads etc, does anyone have an idea whether or not these little trail bikes are restricted at all?

Can't find anything on the web other than the usual 'race' tunes like pipes etc.

Nothing major is required, just perhaps being able to keep up to 29mph on a slight gradient

Thanks Shel

Re: Can anyone make an MT50 quicker?

MT50`s were all the rage when I was a wee 16er on my TS50ER.

The MT50 and the road version MB50 were apparently designed to do 30mph maximum if I remember correctly.
That was the 16er law then.....no compulsory pedals like on the 50mph AP50 and SS50 but restricted to 30mph.

There used to be big bore kits and exhausts available, but to be honest it`d be cheaper and easier to just buy something else that had more power and speed.

Re: Can anyone make an MT50 quicker?

Tarka's right.

In my 50cc days I used to make a few quid tuning my mates DT's TS's and so on. This consisted of removing the head gasket and badly raising the top edge of the exhaust port by a few mm. maybe a K&N filter and a noisy tailpipe.

This used to help the bike rev out and gain a little more top end at the expense of any mid range that was there to start with., until about a week later the instant head-gasket would blow. By little we are talking 3-4 mph max, downhill, and slower up hill!!

As Tarka says it's not really worth it. The manufactures seemed to put a lot of effort into ensuring these things didn't exceed the 35mph max. allowed by the UK moped law.

I got my Suzuki TS50ER upto a reasonable speed by fitting the full Malossi 75cc big bore kit, consiting of new barrel, piston, carb. and full exhaust system, on a good day it would touch 50mph then seize.

(Obviously officially the bike wasn't then a moped so illegal to ride, but I was young, 16 and care free, and mph was the most important thing.....after girls)

Re: Can anyone make an MT50 quicker?

MT50's are very difficult to de-restrict,big bore kit would be easiest way to do it. only prob then is its illegal to ride as a moped.
another trick is to use an H100 engine as they fit but again illegal!

Even quicker with some heavy weights strapped to it, helps the gravitational pull

Re: Can anyone make an MT50 quicker?

I currently own a Mx50, i had to de-restricted, fitted a preformance air filter/ drilled the jet and stuck a arrow pipe on it, now i get around 50-65mph depending on wind

Not a bad idea Mad Cow but Norfolk is a bit flat apparently....

As for ''pull'' mikeo, I believe it couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding

MCsanandreas, thanks, he's apparently thought of that but is still trying to keep it looking standardish if possible.

Your shout sounds interesting Palmer, any idea what size jet you changed to or how you actually 'drilled the jet'' please. Cheers
