Could anyone help identify my old bike ?
My old bike I thought was an xl250 but searches show a different bike.

That's a mid 70's XL250 alright, Honda kept changing the styling over the years so any image search will throw up a whole heap of different looking machines.

You're welcome
"So have you still got it Rick?"
I wish. We parted company many moons ago.
I would love to get another one.
I seem to remember that the model after this one, the front mud guard moved up.

Well,I remember owning one of those many years ago, the one I had was a K3 model, four valve head, two exhaust valves but one port, a bit like the SR250 engine. Yours appears to have the one exhaust port so it's before the 250S which had two exhaust ports. The first of the XL's had two valve heads with one exhaust but I don't think yours is as old as that, but looks like an XL alright, might be a transplanted SR engine confusing the issue?
"might be a transplanted SR engine confusing the issue"
I got it new, so engine original.
It had 4 valves and one exhaust port, (I had it in bits once)
Was your tank the same ? same shape I mean.
Could be K3 then?

It's definately a UK spec XL250 of about 1978/9 vintage.
I know because I nearly bought one that was a couple of years older as my first ever bike in 1979. Sadly the owner (a friend's elder brother) smashed it up before we could agree the sale. I bought a Honda CB250G5 instead... oh what a mistake!
I do recall going to the local bike shop and getting the brochure for the current bike (1979) and it was identical to the picture. And yes it was a two valve engine, so this is not an SR lump (there is a clue as it says Honda on the enging casing).
The replacement for this model the was the XL250S and as Africajim says, a completely different bike, , this was the four valve, twin exhaust motor that was used for several years in XL's and the CB250RS. I had one of those brand new in 1980, fantastic little bike!

Well bless my soul, isn't that a Griffin helmet? I used to have one of those and the visor kept having an epi every time I went over 35
