    CB500-4

I have filled the garage slot occupied by the CB750F2 with a 1974 CB500-4. After selling the 750 I decided to go for an older bike started looking at 70's CB/CL450 (post black Bomber) or CB750A but this appeared locally, guy has owned it for 25 years using it intermittantly on the road for a year then left in garage for a few. Its only done 25000 miles standard exhaust fitted, repainted, engine very quiet.

WOW what a beauty well wear with it . the 500four would be my pick of the 70's inline 4 cylinders based on having owned a 400four too small for me now and ridden a 750 four too heavy and a couple 550 fours just right plenty of power comfortable size and a nice handler on the back roads I rode a really mint one that had been imported from the USA with very small miles and I mean not a speck of rust it was an Absolut joy to ride and some people would stone me to death for saying it but it was far nicer to ride than my 1340 Harley I had at the time just purring along at 70mph and not trying to shake the shit out of me it was blue with a stock 4 into one with 1 and super sport wrote under the Honda logo . a 550 four would do too just fine too but the 500four is just that bit cooler being older .

people rave about the headers on the 400four they are nice but the 4 snazzy shaped mufflers on the 500 really caught my eye as a child the first time I seen them the more silencers the bike had the better I thought . the blue 550 I rode was ridden over a couple of winters and after the salt got at it , it was rusted beyond believe I nearly cried when I saw it again . I take it the 87 Transalp will be left at home when your going on the vintage club runs now I would really love a black bomber though mainly because they are even older again but id say they are a savage price altogether for a nice one if you could even fine one for sale I read somewhere they a better bike than the 750four for the size of them but were only a twin so didn't have the kerb appeal . and I haven't the price of a pair of tyres to spare to be honest . there is a great review of the 500four on youtube an old English gent does it he done a james 500 too and a Vincent I think .

That looks lovely dod. Nice and original too by the looks of it, well apart from the rack!

need the rack to lift it on the centre stand, but DS has lifting handles so when I get round to ordering it I will remove the rack. Did have a topbox as well but that is on the 87 TA at the moment. The only main item missing are the fork headlamp 'ears', its fitted with aftermarket ones at the moment.

I have a 74' 500/4,i have owned it for over 30 odd years,it's a garnet Brown one.I restored it many years ago before the spares prices went really silly,it's been off the road for 6 or 7 years now as i need to rebuild the top end but never seem to find the time nowadays. Those headlight "ears" are like hens teeth or maybe even a bit rarer and the last pair i saw being sold fetched over £250!

Excuse me sticking my nose in but would the headlight brackets from a 76 model fit?
If so there is one on German ebay.

    Re: CB500-4

I found a set of 550 ears that look similar to 500 ones and will be better than the current ones, managed to find the lower cushions but the upper ones will have to be made. I have removed the top box and carrier & made a lifting handle using the remains of some Harley saddlebag rails which will do until DS has them in. I will probably get it Mot'd next week.
SV you and I posted at almost the same time, thanks for the link but as you read I had got myself sorted, I think.
