avatars, where do I get one or how can I make one?

I've noticed I'm using someone elses avatar (sorry africajim), the question is how do I make or get something unique, there are some great ones on the site.
I'm barely computer literate so if it's too complicated I won't bother, but I'd love to do an animated.
Maybe there's someone to help?
