    Threads being marked as read

I drop in frequently but don't always have time to hang around and read all the stuff I want to but it seems if I only read one group the next time I visit all the other stuff in the other groups I had still to read has been automatically marked read.

For example. I dropped in on Sunday and read all the posts in varadero, Technical and Chatter.
I then dropped in on Monday Lunchtime and read a few posts in the vara section and left leaveing the tech and chatter ones unread to be read the next time I drop in.
Now (on Tuesday) the only new posts in tech and chatter marked unread are posts made since my last visit (Monday) as opposed to the ones I haven't read which are from the day before. The Sunday night and Monday morning posts are all shown as read despite me not reading them.

Even groups I don't normally read are shown as having no new posts even though there must be hundreds there.

Is there some setting I have missed as other vbulletin boards I frequent don't display this behaivour?

Have you tried the quick links.
You can review todays the last seven days etc.
I think it only shows the posts updated since your last visit.

Re: Threads being marked as read

I noticed this behaviour when I moved the forum across to vBulletin.
I know that vB uses a cookie to store information on what you've read and not read. But as you say I've never found it that good.
There is an option for it to handle this via the database, so the system looks in the database to see what you've read or not. However this has an additional load on the server which I don't really want at the moment so haven't turned it on.
It could be that the other forums you frequent have this turned on.

its actually worse than this, if you stay logged in but don't read all the posts for a while, like go and make a cup of coffee and get distracted by the olympics, when I go back to a forum all the posts are marked as read whereas when I left it I know there was unread posts. Presumably there is some sort of time out thing programmed into the cookie, or it is automatically refreshed afet a certain time and thinks you are all up to date.

    OK enough already

Right I've turned on the super duper thread tracking system.

This stores what you're read and not read in the database.
If after 14 days you haven't read a forum it will consider all posts in that forum as read.

However this is now adding extra load to the server, so it might need to come off. So in return persuade as many people to take out a subscription then Annette will let me buy a newer bigger server.

    LOL!

And now swiftly turned off again as it was shagging the forum performance.

So have enabled cookie method again now and turned the session time out up to 1 hour from 15 mins.

    Let's see how that goes.
