Hugger for RD07/RD07A Africa Twin

Hugger for Africa Twin RD07/RD07A

This is a mod that I put on my @ back in November 2006 and it has remained on ever since.

The hugger is manufactured by a French company called Motax .

It is manufactured from fibreglass and only has the smooth black gelcoat finish on the outside surface – so the inner surface (next to the tyre is quite rough with the glass matting.

I painted mine liberally with smooth black Hammerite which made it more aesthetically pleasing (not that you ever see the inside) but more importantly more hardwearing with all the crud that gets thrown up.

The hugger covers the back tyre and is also an integral chainguard, so you need to remove the existing one to get this to fit – the front edge sits just on top of the front edge of the swingarm, so you do get a lot of protection from any crap that gets thrown around.

Mounting the hugger is easy – use the original 2 chain guard bolts on the left side and the 2 rear brake hose clamp fixing screws on the right side – that’s it.
I did have to put a couple of washers on the right side to centralise the hugger over the rear wheel though.

It is a very snug fit – no interference on standard size Michelin Anakees, but I did have to adjust it slightly to get clearance for the Continental TKC80’s

I’m very pleased with how it keeps the underneath of the seat area and my shiny Ohlins shocker clean, but less than impressed with the quality of finish when it arrived.

I suppose for the money I expected something along the lines of what Skidmarx offer, but it wasn’t too much hard work to get it up to the standard I wanted.

Would I recommend it - probably not for the money - BUT there was a very lengthy thread about making one here - although unfortunately nothing ever came of it.

Re: Hugger for RD07 Africa Twin

Fitted mine about a fortnight ago. Keeps the crap down but does rattle a bit on our bumpy back roads. Not quit sure wether to keep it or go back to a normal chain guard. Need to try it in the mud before i make my final decision.
