Day 10: St Hubert to Cardiff, UK (438 miles)
St Hubert wasn’t an ideal place to stay. It had taken two days to reach the town on the way down, so I was left with a long ride on my final day. On my side was the fact that the ride down had been a relaxed jaunt while we’d waited for John to catch up. I’d persuaded the hotel manager to serve breakfast early and I was on the road before dawn.
Some great roads and little traffic allowed me to reach Dunkerque by 13:00, even after a long and unnecessary detour around roadworks on the A25. I was supposed to pay to change the time of my ferry crossing, but because time was tight for the next sailing the Norfolk Line official waved the fee. A two-hour crossing has one benefit: a chance to relax, eat and get some shut-eye. The last leg – heavy rush-hour traffic on British motorways – was lightened only by a tail wind. I was really glad to arrive home some twelve and a half hours after I’d set out.
