Heading south down the Transamerica Highway, we decide to take the advice of a couple of folk and head inland towards the Cordillera Blancas.
The day starts off on the coastal highway.
We pass the now usual casualties of everyday Peruvian driving…
Then turn off up a tarmac road following a lush and green river valley. The ridge we’re heading for is just poking out of the clouds…
..up a potholed tarmac road, passing fields of sugar cane.
Leaving the tarmac behind, we take to a dirt track, making our steadily east….
But all the time, we continue to climb…
Until we reach the steep, green, terraced hills.
Heading ever upwards, the view down starts to get dizzy….
Up and up, the track starts to become muddier and muddier. Slipping our way through a couple of grim sections, we make it to a little town.
Climbing again and we’re now up at over 4000 m. The AT is still pulling strong at this altitude up through the open moorland. The countryside looks and feels (bloody cold) just like British moorland in the spring.
We crest the ridge and are presented we this…
With daylight starting to fade, we ride down towards to bottom of the valley (3000m), passing through small adobe villages on the way….
The next day, we start to make our way up towards a tunnel in the Cordillera Blancas.
Passing through, we’re blessed by a 50 foot beardy character…
Back on the highway, one last stop before the decent towards the coast.
Then down through the clouds…
..and finally into another sugar cane valley leading towards the sea.
We make it back to the coast just in time to catch the last few rays of sunlight…
The next morning? It's spent changing a flat….
