End 2 End - A midlife crisis
http://practicaljokeonline.com/winner.html http://jokeonlineworld.com/gift.html Tuesday 22nd March - cold, snowing, misearble - I'm off to Lands End. Only 450 ish miles from Humberside Airport - be there for tea, says Pete. I'm on my trusty 1991 @, Pete's on a 96 Triumph Adventurer. True enough, we were at St Just for tea - 5 miles from Lands End. Weather still crap!
Wednesday - another quick trip. Lands End to Goosenagh (Preston ish). All Ok. Weather getting better - still cold, but sun coming out. After 10 miles of filtering up M6 near Stafford, trying to remember how wide I am with panniers - sorry Mr BMW - we pass Manchester and stable the bile for the night. In time for tea - or rather a few beers and a slap up meal.
Thursday - the fun starts. It's foggy
The old A6 through Shap is great - real roads at last. The sun is now shining, fit to burst - I'm smiling like a lunatic. Up to Gretna and onto the old A74 (whatever they call it) to Lesmahagow then through Glasgow and onto the A82 up past Loch Lomond, Crainlaraich, to stop for coffee at the Green Welly, Tyndrum. Suitably refreshed over Rannoch Moor, down Glen Coe and into Fort William.
Friday - leave Fort William and head up the Great Glen to Drumnadrochit - it takes 3 hours to do 45 miles - Pete keeps stopping to take photos, can't blame him it is gorgeous. From Loch Ness to Beauly, Dingwall and on up the A9 to John O Groats. Once we have done the paperwrk and had a pint, I break it to Pete that this is not the most northerly bit of the mainland - so off we go to Dunnet Head. Once back at the B&B, bikes parked - some serious celebrating was done!
Saturday - sun shining. Breakfast overlooking the Pentland Firth & the Orkney Islands. Shame to go home really. Southbound for Jedburgh. Got to get a move on or we could miss tea!! The back roads through Avimore are still fun. Stopped at Kinross for coffee and a Fireblade rider got upset when we answered his "have you come far?" enquiry. Suitably enlightened he promised to make more of an effort in future!! Edinburgh was.......
The A68 is a must for "Speed Camera" spotters - there's on every mile or so it feels. 60 mph and a queue behind, but who cares. I did get one to go off - head on at 80, cause I got bored.
Sunday - sun trying to shine. Jedburgh to home via Stokesley to pick up Treehugger Jnr and his 125 Varra. The English bit of the A68 is wonderfull all the way to Darlington. From Stokesly we took the interesting route past the Lion pub, Blakey Ridge, into Hutton le Hole and over to Malton. From there through Wetwang ( there is a place honest!!) to Beverley, over the Bridge & home.
In all, 18064 miles, 6 days, numb bum, knackered wrist, over £200 for charity - and one more tick on the list of things to do before I get altzheimers and forget!!!
