Knochhill track day

Yesterday I finally got round to using my 40th birthday present from my wife a newcomers track day at Knockhill racing circuit.
I left Arran on the first ferry bit of shopping in Glasgow for my son's birthday present then on to Knockhill racing circuit.
Arrived at 1pm an hour early sat in the restaurant with a coffee and watched all the other nervous novices arrive.
2pm time for the safety briefing then we were taken round the track in cars to show us the racing line the it was on to the bikes to follow the safety car to familiarize us with the track.
Then came the bit we had all been waiting for the open track session so it was on to the track to see how far I could push it great fun but the Transalp was seriously under powered compared to the collection of sport bikes still had a great day and would recommend it.

The weather wasn't very good but I recorded this video.

Nice vid and good riding

I would have popped up if you posted you were going. I'll need to look at the Knockhill website for days like this, although I would prefer some instruction a bit of advanced riding techniques...

Looks a blast though

Hi Alba you should definitely give it a try I was nervous about it but the instructors are great they don't give you any advanced riding techniques but plenty of advice great day out

That reminds me, do they insist on a one piece suit? I remember something in the Ride mag that they were having a track day and one piece or zipable suits were a must...

Re: Knochhill track day

Well done Bandit

You disciplined yourself not to turn in until you reached the turn in point / cone and resulted in a smooth transition to the apex and then exit (unlike the chappie you caught up with that was starting the turn too early, ended up on the wrong line several times and braked thereby thrippeny bitted the corners)

This same point (turn in) is used at race pace because it gets the quickest line through the bend(s) but the bikes are turned in much harder by forceful countersteering resulting in more wear on the front than the rear tyres

What you can take away and apply to the road from this is the smooth lines around bends and the ability to change direction mid corner with practice when you need to avoid hazards (no matter how good we are we all get it wrong sometinmes and having the ability to recover unscathed is something that may keep you upright and alive)

Regards

Paul

Cheers Paul it was only on the straits that the sports bikes got away from me on the twisty bits I could keep up
