Re: Glencoe May 09 - The Wet One

Thought I'd pop my report on here as well

    Saturday 9th May
Rain - loads of it in between very short periods of light drizzle

Got soaked from Aviemore through to Fort Bill, stopped for a coffee and a quick drying session, then on to camp site. Only to find two TA's and a Domi locked up and abandoned. No sign of the riders what so ever. Head for the local inn to find a blue TA parked up outside. Just turning the bike round in the car park to take a closer look at the TA, when Largewayround rolls up.
Together we wander into the inn, spot Alba in the bar, wander round to said bar to find IanS, Rickskye & Houdlum! supping and chatting.
Turns out they'd tried to light a fire earlier in the morning, to warm themselves up after a good soaking, gave up on that and headed for the pub . We plotted up a route for the afternoon, the three sturdy campers ordered some hot food whilst Alba, Lagrewayround and myself headed for the camp site, so they could get their tents up before the ride.

Once all were sorted, food and tent wise, we headed of into the brightening skies with Ardnamurchan as the destination. Rain pestered us on and off. We boarded the Connan! ferry for a very short crossing (my type of ferry crossing - no longer than about 3 minutes ) then headed for the roads that led west.

I left the guys at Salen as they headed for the lighthouse. Weather was a bit like sand paper - wet & dry in places. Had to photo the Commando monument and the hills beyond as I headed east for Fort Augustus. Got to say that I've not seen the hills looking so bonny at this time of year before.

    326 miles for me

Wet , Soaked , But Still Happy

Left Aberdeen @ 0730 hrs into the eye of the storm, South of Glen Shee, there was mega rain storm.. Tourist were swimming for their cars, ducks were swimming down the roads.. ..

Met a wet looking SteveT at the Inn and the rest of the brave souls were already enjoying a fine heat and food at the bar.

Took a spin down to the Campsite to pitch the tent..

SteveT , At a soggy campsite

A bit Later the we all took a ride out to the Corran Ferry via Scenic Petrol Station

    Animated Conversation on the ferry

    5 minute Break at Strontian

Said Goodbye to SteveT at Salen , while the rest of us made our way along the Ardnamurchan Lighthouse.
The Light house is the Most Western Mainland point in Scotland I think.. Along the single track road for 30 odd miles ..

    The lighthouse and Views..

This was the view for coffee at Lighthouse.

A break in the rain, back along the Awesome road the Salen where we stopping to take in the view.

At Salen, A local come out and was chatting and showing us pictures of really cool looking old bikes..

Back to Corran Ferry for the return trip ..

    Oh My... BLUE SKY

But rain on the way.. Nice view though ,,

    Back to the Campsite...
For a change of clothes and down to the pub for the supper.. and a few drinks..

It was sunny on sunday morning .. Time to get busy drying out and packing up..

Ian and myself , drove down Glen Coe together.. a bit wet and dry mixed.. But great fun..

We split up at crianlarich, I rode up To Pitlochry then up and over Glen Shee

Got home safely with a big smile, as the Sun came out..

What a Weekend...... Thanks Guys It was Great fun....

Re: Glencoe May 09 - The Wet One

    A very wet weekend.
Got soaked on the way north and never got my bike gear dry again until home.

It was that wet through Friday night and Saturday morning we coundn't even get a fire started with fire lighters, paper, petrol and Maya dust.
In the end we gave up and walked to the pub.

    Sunday mornings efforts.

    XRV camping area.

    Snow on hills above camp.

    Another suberb XRV weekend.
Great people, food, beer and the Highlands

    Thanks guys.

Ian S - I see a pattern emerging here, involving you, camping and fires. The combination appears to equal very heavy rain.

If you could provide a list of places you intend lighting fires this year, the rest of us can know to avoid them.

I second that. We had two days of blazing sunshine here in the east!

Mind you, the photos look great. We can't compete with that scenery.

Guys why is it you only decide to go out when the weather is awful? Its either high winds, driving rain or high winds and driving rain. Is it because only the weak and the english ride in the sunshine?
