Thank Crunchie it's Friday
Doctor Law (Ros) and I managed to skive off on Friday and met at Ryka's about 11.30.
After the great weather on Thursday, Friday knuckled down to drizzle, rain and scotch mist, which was a bit of a shame but we still had a great time.
We went and found about a mile long stretch of windy road so Ros could practice throwing her BMW 650 through corners. We went back and forth several times until she cracked it. And then when I suggested moving on she wanted to do it again, getting faster each time.
We then headed off for a lovely ride I know, only to hit absolute pea soup within a few minutes. We rode and rode and at one point I had abandoned my visor and my glasses and face were soaked and I realised that I was doing 23 mph according to my Sat Nav.
I could see perhaps 180 metres ahead of me. The clouds had simply come down and we were in the middle of them, wet and unable to see a thing.
We headed out of there to a road quite near Ryka's that has had half of it recently resurfaced - perfect for practising on. I led first then Ros took over.
Within 200 yards she was suddenly confronted with a pheasant leaping out of the hedge and crossing in front of her. I have seen sheep jump out at Sharrie and now this.
I spent the rest of that lap reciting to myself: I am not a pheasant plucker, I'm a pheasant plucker's mate and I'm only plucking pheasants cos the pheasant plucker's late.
It did not unnerve her at all. Ros just took to it like a pro. She completely got over any fear she may have had about riding with with knobblies in the wet. She'll be getting her knee down soon.
After a few more goes she was setting a rate that I reckoned might be a bit pacy for some on an XRV rideout.
After another cuppa and bun at Ryka's (even Ryka's can't murder and toasted tea cake, I thought, but they can
) We did a bit of slow control in the car park until Ros could turn the bike on a sixpence (well, ride in, turn and ride out in two car parking spaces).
Then it started drizzling again so we headed back off. And the clouds came back down and soaked us and cut visibility again, so we abandoned plans for a jaunt along the A25 and headed back to town, zipping through the school-run traffic.
We thought we might try to have Thank Crunchie Fridays every few weeks, perhaps going into Kent or meeting anyone else who can get the odd Friday off and knows a tea hut and some roads.
It's a really good way to unwind.
