    Re: HUMM 2010 and Beyond

    update on the DRZ:

Firstly, there was nowt wrong with cam chain/tensioner, just me being paranoid. Replacing the chain & sprockets has sorted out all the odd noises.

Secondly, I had thought I was riding on the standard 15/44 gearing. My new sprocket set is 15/46 which I thought would be a gearing reduction. But on removing old rear sprocket I find it was a 47 tooth. So I did all those high-speed miles on fairly low gearing, and she never missed a beat.

Only damage was to an aftermarket part, one of my DirtBagz pannier rails which has a bit of a stress fracture near the bolt. Probably from me yanking it upwards away from the hot exhaust can. Getting it welded up today.

Fuel usage compared to KTM950 - about 2/3 as much on the road at 65mph, about 1/2 as much on trails. (And the KTM lost its clutch fluid).

    In summary,

Looks like it was a lot of fun - was hoping to be at the HUMM this year after doing the 2009 event but unfortunately stuck in not so sunny scotland working - and without bike my bike

Although Ive already heard rumours that charles on KTM690 who was my team mate last year (of charlies angels) was one of the unfortunate ones who had a few problems on his way - or at least his team mate did i think!! havent heard all the gorey details but sure I will do soon!!

Really hope to be at the 2011 event

Fantastic write up there Alistair and cracking pics!
Glad to hear I'm not the only one who had a paranoid concern about the cam chain, but what year model is your? If it's post '03, it should have the automatic tensioner fitted...allegedly.

Well done on your result too mate.

    Re: HUMM 2010 and Beyond

Thanks Si, i just read your epic blog and looked at your excellent photos via WMTRF. Looks like you had some interesting experiences on your travels. Have you learned the Spanish or Basque word for 'welder' then?

Yes my DRZ is an 05. They've always had an ACCT but the design was changed a couple of times up to 03. I think the later design is supposed to be reliable but a MCCT is preferred because if properly set up the cam chain wears out more slowly. Really I've never found anyone who has had cam chain problems, its just a big scare story which jumps into your head every time you hear an odd noise. In my case the only noise came from the worn drive chain starting to ride up on the old sprockets.
