Have you done any advanced rider training?

Have you done any advanced rider training, such as IAM, ROSPA?
Let me know of any other types to add to the poll.

Re: Have you done any advanced rider training?

I've put police down as I have done a basic response training course with south wales police, but this also gives me IAM certification. I did it in a bloody great big landrover but the police man who taught me was a motorcyclist and he gave me all the techniques for riding, he has kindly offered his services for rider training too.

Very nice man

Very well worth doing, any extra training will give so much more than the basic training you do to pass your test

There's isn't a 'no I haven't' button on the poll.

Re: Have you done any advanced rider training?

Yep, done the IAM test on my bike, and I'm the middle of doing the RoSPA "course".

Why both? Well, with the IAM, you do the test, get certified and that's it. With RoSPA there a 3 levels of pass, bronze, silver and gold, plus you have to re-take your test every 3 years to maintain your certificate. So it would seem that there is a higher standard offered from RoSPA... which is why I'm doing it.

Once this is done, some off-road training I think.

There I was wondering how to do it when Dave comes to the rescue, cheers Dave.

I know three people who've done their advanced test and two have had more accidents (lots of low speed drops oddly) than before. They have improved their riding in all areas except remembering not to use the front brake sharply with the handlebars turned.....

The third (most recent of the three) has started obeying speed limits in some very odd places, rather than riding in accordance with the conditions. By that I mean sticking exactly to the posted limit, even when it was obviously set too low or too high. I asked her why she was doing it and she replied, 'all speed limits are there for a reason!' Then she said that 'speeding vehicles were the major cause of road accidents'. I looked but couldn't see and signs of a lobotomy....

I don't know which of the advanced courses they did, I'll try and find out.

Re: Have you done any advanced rider training?

Do we want to include any 'off road' training as an option?

If you get caught in London doing 34 in a 30 zone you get to go on a speed awareness course in which they try to ram this point home. In all the examples given there were clearly other factors at play, such as badly parked vehicles and kids running into the road etc., but they are all ignored and speed is blamed. The argument runs that if cars are parked badly and kids run into the road but you were only doing 4mph then there would have been less damage done. Trouble is they send us on speed courses but never tackle the parking issue or the parents who don't teach their kids to cross roads safely.
