Each time is different, isn't it?
The white lines can create a bit of instability but only a tiny amount even if I'm on a bend and slip right off them. I would rarely have my attention on the spacing when overtaking at 50+ and if the surface/conditions were such that I needed to be knowingly aware of them, I doubt very much that I'd be overtaking.

I would though, always be constantly monitoring and checking from pull out to pull in and would only be out there if there was a way back within visible safe distance.

And it's my guess that we all do something like that?
Yes Steve, in an ideal world every move would be controlled and easy and everyone would anticipate each others intentions, but life ain't like that and I would prefer that peeps take a little time and think about what's going on and plan their move first, if you move out early and accelerate smoothly the car you're overtaking will see you earlier and work out what's going on, if you just dart out and nail it two seconds isn't going to help when he decide to swing right, at least if he's seen you he's less likely to do something dumb.
Failing to plan is planning to fail (god I hate that analogy, but it seemed to fit here).
THERE ARE NO CAST IRON RULES, JUST THINK AND PLAN AHEAD AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.
If anyone still doesn't understand I suggest you stand on a motorway bridge and watch the common theme of those who get in trouble, not looking and not planning.
