Well these two posts are a debate all on their own, and I know that Stanbloke and I chatted about this.

Do DSA instructors get taught advanced riding on their instructors courses, or do they get taught to teach people how to get through their test?

Edited to change the thread title.. again.. as vBulletin messed it up

Re: Have you done any advanced rider training?

I don't know if it applies to bikes but the DSA instructors and examiners test bus drivers fairly frequently and the only check that we are still driving as we did on the test.

Personally I think they are only taught to teach others to pass the bike test and very little else. I have noted that there seem to be a few differences of opinions between the two main types of advanced riding, are they both correct, is one incorrect, who can say?

At the end of the day you have to do as your instructor tells you in order to get the advanced pass certificate too. The true test comes when you've survived many years and miles without coming a cropper. I think the advanced riding courses may possibly enable a new rider to get past the dangerous time, usually in the first few years, that nearly everyone goes through where they think they are too good to hurt themselves. It could also get rid of bad habits in more experienced riders as well I guess.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

Yes we do once your a fully qualified motorbike instructor you can take there special test, which is 2 hours of riding including all road types and you cant make any minor riding faults. Very intense, but worth the certificate just for insurance purposes . I know only pay £85 a year fully comp for 5 bikes!

friend of mine is a car driving instructor now and i dont think you need an advanced test pass to become an instuctor, just a full U.K. licence.

is it worth taking an advanced course?

Re: Do DSA instructors learn advanced riding on their course?

Turning this thread on its head - currently you dont need to have had any training or passed any exams to advertise & offer your services as an advanced riding instructor. So long as you've got the relavent insurance cover, you can take peoples money and take them out onto the road to do "advanced" riding.

There is a scheme that started last year where those wishing to go onto a government register of advanced instructors can take a couple of tests, pay a fee then call themselves "registered advanced instructors". It's not yet compulsory and as far as I'm aware the up take has been very low.

Personally I'd look to a serving or retired Police class 1 riding instructor for any advanced training that wasn't available from either IAM or ROSPA (only put in that order cos it's alphabetical ).

Re: Do DSA instructors learn advanced riding on their course?

As the owner of a training company and as a fully qualified dsa instructor i can confirm that no advanced tuition is given during the majority of instructors courses. Most instructor courses are geared to providing CBT tuition to DSA standard. From there a "down trained" instructor must pass the DSA examination at Cardington HQ. It is then up to the individual instructor to gain further experience to allow them to pass the Direct Access assessment. This then allows them to tutor direct access courses.

All of our instructors are fully qualified with the DSA, I.A.M Qualified observers, RoSPA Diploma holders and Police Class 1 Tutors, we also have two ex examniers working to promote rider/ driver safety.

If an instructor is professional they would continue to gain qualifications throughout there working career.

    hope this helps.
