Green Lanes In Dorset

Can anyone recommend a website that lists all the green lanes in the Dorset area as the Dorset County website has turned up nada?

Finally built up the balls to take my bike for some gentle off roadin, now just gotta find out where

Try this one Raven;

http://www.way-finder.co.uk/

Also get your self a Landranger map 195 ( that should cover your area).

Good luck and take it easy mate..

Re: Green Lanes In Dorset

My advice to you would be to join the TRF. That way you'll know that all the lanes you ride are legal and you'll get shown them all in your area.
If you want to go greenlaning it'll be the best £40 you'll spend.

Re: Green Lanes In Dorset

I was warned to stay away from the TRF by more than one person because most chapters have a negative predjudice towards both young people and big trailie riders .

Re: Green Lanes In Dorset

Dorset is a strange county. Lots of Unclassified County Roads but not many Byways so you need to do your research as not all UCR's are legal. I think the Dorset group of the TRF is a good one with lots of knowledge your looking for. Why not go along to a few meetings before joining and see for yourself?? Surely this is the best way of learning about them. If you get a crap response, don't join. What you might find is a reluctance to offer loads of info before you join which I can understand.

I take it I need to then look for Byways Open to All Traffic to be on the safe side? I'm off down WH Smith in a minute to get that landranger map, I'll see what I can find on there. That wayfinder site is good but there is so many acronyms, I don't know what half of them mean

Re: Green Lanes In Dorset

We are very lucky down here ! Loads of places to ride, all 1oo% legal (Hants Dorset border)

I will not post details on any open forum of routes as it has taken two years of riding and research to join them up into a brilliant route . (lets keep it that way !)

I agree about the TRF , not my cup of tea but each to their own

The O/S maps are NOT definative but are the first place to start.
Look for +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ Byways. (look near Downton)

Still a few UCRs etc but confusion and will remain high since NERC.
Some routes are signposted as "restricted byways" by the council , some are correct , many are NOT as they still have higher rights (to lazy to post endless info on this, it get very complicated )

Just some advice though ! NEVER ride on you own , this little hobby can really bite bloody hard for the lone rider .

Hi doods. I have no problems sharing my routes with anyone (bikes) BUT the problem is many lanes are under severe threat of closure, hence its best kept a little quiet , I have nothing against the 4x4 brigade but I posted a ride report on another forum with gps details etc, BIG mistake

Two weeks later I rode it again I came across 7 Paris Dakar stickered -up, winched-up, tractor-tyred >>> 4x4 types. (they had driven from Essex to wreck our little lanes)

(I had never seen any other car/tractor on it in the last two years)

The once nice boggy lane had turned into a total mess.
The leader had a copy of my ride report (It was on his dashboard) .

I witnessed (and took pics) of them winching off trees as well as having a tug-of war (to see how much of a total fergin mess they could inflict I suppose

1gear1brake : you rode on part of it, it was then not too bad, it is NOW totall joke for ALL users, it is now under threat of a permanent TRO (its currently a voluentry restriction (winter) BUT even that gets ignored !

Sorry for the rant, but lets use our heads to TRY and look after whats left.
Andy
