Stone chips at side of road

I go up and down the sides of Loch Ness on the A82 regularly and I have noticed Transerve ( our local trunk road maintenance contractor ) have started work on replacing the grass verges with 20 mm chips.
I assume this is to cut down on maintenace costs, cutting grass verges etc, but what it is doing is creating a potential traffic hazard, in particular to motor cyclists.

The chips are right hard against the edge of the tarmac, going back towards a rock face for about 1500 mm ,so all it takes is for an artic/rigid HGV to straddle the edge of the carriageway and it throws chips out onto the road. I have witnessed this last week on a section that they had done previously. On this occasion, the chips were lying right on the "line" at a fast left hand bend.
The A82 is used a lot by bikers during the summer as it has long sweeping corners and fast straights and once it gets busy next year I can see a problem arising.

I am going to make an appointment with our local councillor to see if there is some way of stopping this madness. I would see the point if they were installing french drains to aid surface water off the road, but this is purely a money saving operation.

Just wondering if any of you guys have come up against this in the past and if so, what is the best way to tackle it.

This happened on the Lekdijk as well. It's one of the more popular bits of twisty road for motorcycles in holland, and lots of them complained and sued the local town for damages because of unsafe roads... So the road was closed for bikes early this year, and has been all summer.

Bloody hell Michel, that seems a bit OTT, can't see them doing that on the A82 -- it is the main road linking the South West to the North and it is really busy in the summer time. Were there any major accidents prior to road closure ?

Nothing really major as far as I know, but it's easy to rack up a lot of damage in some minor sportbike spills. I've heard it was an insurance matter, people kept claiming damages because of the road condition, and the insurance company said no more.

So they closed it, which was easy because it's a road from nothing to nowhere, not a major road.

And it's a bloody shame, because to be honest I'd never really noticed any gravel on the road while overtaking ducatis round the outside. Gotta love these trailies...
