and whats the accepted wisdom on braking (keep in mind i dont do much offroading) should i be using front or back? (most of my offroading is done in light mud / gravel tracks if that helps, and im on road tyres)
I dont do off road but covering the brake over here is a failure and a big NO NO even with 2 fingers, if you plan to do more offroad then move the brake lever to a more comfortable angle where you have to make a deliberate movement to control the brakes and not a sudden grip in panic.
your on road tyres and if your covering the brake the chances are you will lock up quicker than you can react I ride in ice and ****ty roads and brake now with only one finger and watch for every cage that has me in their sights. I'm sure an offroad guru will be along to say b0llcks but using the ground and observation over speed is better than brakes if you have brake then easy and controlled, you have more feeling in your fingers than under the size 11s

Try slackening the brake lever assembly and pushing the lever down a bit and leave the assembly so that it will move with a bit of effort. When standing, I prefer the lever down about an inch or two from normal. Have a play and see what suits you, also adjust the lever so that is a little closer to the bars themselves so you can tickle the lever with one/two fingers when you need to.

In theory, the back brake is used more than the front off-road, but it depends on the conditions. A locked up front end is a sight harder to recover from than a back end hopping or sliding about I have always been willing to use a front brake, more than many I was once told, but it may date from many, many, many moons ago when I did trials riding and the ability to use the front was useful...

ref fingers on the clutch Im happy to ride standing with two fingers covering the clutch as it allows for a better grip on the bars for control, as for the front brake covering sometimes I cover it but alot of the time I dont, having been riding off road for a number of years now I tend to know when Im about to get into trouble and can usually get back down to the sitting position and get a big handful of front brake if required.
Hell I,m at the stage now where i even bail out before the accident happens if I know its going to be a big one, now that is knowledge and experience

Standing on the pegs when you are doing a long stint off-road is part and parcel of riding trial bikes,as is weight-shifting on the pegs to change direction so its something that should be practiced and learnt. When i first got the hang of weight-shifting combined with going up or down through the gears whilst standing on the pegs i felt like a Dakar GOD.....(of course i wasn`t as those dudes are something else)but the thrill was unforgetable. Now i sometimes show-off(only when i think its safe)or over-take phone using car/van drivers standing on the pegs and flying up/down through the gears as they slow down to go over their speed bumps.I`m sure it scares the ****e out of them

I have stood up many times whilst riding, and it never fails to surprise me that when I sit back down, things feel cramped and my ar#e is on the road.

I told you you should have put a seat on your bike, it would stop the gravel rash from your ar*e dragging on the road.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE
