    Question a filtering question

here's a question that I was hoping that XRV's collective wisdom could help me with.

highway codes says (and I'm paraphrasing here!) not to overtake on the zig zags either side of a pedestrian crossing.

If I'm 'filtering' past stationary traffic, and I continue to filter into the zig zag area - am I overtaking and thus being a naughty boy ... ?

Does filtering differ from overtaking when the line of traffic I'm going past is stationary.

I presume its simply overtaking and thus shouldn't be done, but just thought I'd check.

I'm currently on jury service and my route to court is along a road with shedloads of zig zag'd crossings and by not filtering past it's adding needless time to my commute!

    thanks all

    Nick

    Re: a filtering question

As far as I understand, filtering is perfectly legal where the vehicles you are filtering around are moving at less than 10mph, where zigzags are displayed ...this warns of pedestrians and then a whole new ball game ensues......so I understand I'm assuming filtering would not be legal on zigzags.
I'm sure someone will be along shortly to correct where I am wrong

I read somewhere (on here i think) that at pedestrian crossings you must not pass the car at the front of the cue.

I commuted London for 7+ years, the "zig zags" bit is always a tricky issue, I tend not to filter on them, and if I do, I pull in just behind the first car by the zebra etc.
    Sohoeasy probably knows more?

That's true. You have to tuck in behind the car waiting on the crossing if you need to filter.

I love these especially as I'm on the brink of my RoSPA test.

Rule 191 says, ... You MUST NOT overtake the moving vehicle nearest the crossing or the vehicle nearest the crossing which has stopped to give way to pedestrians.

But in the traffic signs book it says.. you must not overtake a moving motor vehicle within the zig-zag area before the crossing.

    They contradict each other!

I'd lean towards the rule, because it's in the highway code, and the simple way to remember it is that you can overtake/filter past anything and everyone apart from the guy nearest the crossing.

    Does anyone disagree with that?

I would agree with you, Do not overtake any vehicle at the crossing itself regardless of the traffic conditions.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

Dug out my copy of the TSR&GD 2002, which has the zig zag markings for a Toucan or Pegasus crossing (Zebras, puffins and Pelicans are covered in their own seperate document for some unknown reason). The way I read that is you mustn't overtake any moving vehicle anywhere in the zig zag area, but when the vehicles are stationary, it's only the vehicle nearest the stop line that mustn't be overtaken (regulation 27).

Oh and none of those rules apply to a pedal cycle if it hasn't got a side car. Now that is a weird addition.

    Re: a filtering question

Did an advanced rider course with Hampshire Plod a few years ago and they told you that it's fine to filter in zig zags as long as you don't pass the lead car.

I'm pretty sure this is also mentioned in "Not the Blue Book" as well.
