Sarn Helen and the Gap Road

Jay has asked the National park the following question

Hi please could you confirm if Sarn Helen Roman road is open for off road vehicles. as I'am getting different answers off several organisations many thanks Jason Price

he has now received this email from the national park regarding access to these areas and other "RUPPs" in Wales

Many thanks for your email. As of 16th November 2006 the route known as Sarn Helen became closed to "Mechanically propelled vhehicles", i.e. scramble bikes, 4wd vehicles, quad bikes etc under the NERC Act. This legislation reclassified routes from RUPP (or Roads used as a public path) to Restricted Byway- which these vehicles cannot use. As such, this also applies to all other former RUPPs within the National Park area and beyond, including the Gap road and Rhiw Constab.

Dont take evarything the parks authority dish out as gospel, get along to your local TRF meeting and talk to the ROW guy's there. get yourself some OS map's and get them marked up while you're there.
the parks are quick enough to tellyou where you can't go, but dont let on where you can go.

They've been rights of way for thousands of years. An end of an era; what a pity. I guess we weren't on the ball for campaigning about this.
