    CBT required???

I am totally out of touch with what is what, with regard to who can ride what and when these days as happily, I passed my bike test back in the last Millenium....

So, my SO wishes to get back on 2 wheels again, she never passed a bike test but started off on 50cc many years ago and then used to use a 125, all on L plates. She passed her car test ages ago, so what can she ride at present without having to do any tests or training on L-plates? My vague understanding is that she can ride a scooter under 50cc on her car licence without doing a CBT, is this correct??

The aim is for her to be able to bimble across to her Cousins on a scooter to save the cost of yet another car! Possibly a step up to a 125 again in the future to come trail bike riding with me...?

It depends on when she passed her car test ..
About compulsory basic training (CBT) : Directgov - Motoring

    Quote"
You will need to complete CBT if:
1 . you want to ride a moped (a moped has an engine not over 50 cc with maximum design speed not exceeding 50 kilometres per hour (km/h) which is approximately 31 miles per hour)
    2. you want to ride a motorcycle

If you obtained your car licence before 1 February 2001 you do not need to complete a CBT to ride a moped."

That's pretty definitive, thank you. A scooter it is as it was WAY before 2001 when Jan passed her test

Steve, I looked at this for my wife a couple of years ago, she didn't require a £75 CBT course by law but not having it put the insurance cost up by £300, so CBT it was,

I think it also would be good to take a CBT, for insurance reasons and to brush up on her riding skills..

On Passing a CBT on a 125. she then could ride a 125 for 2 years .. on L plates

Or stick with a 50cc on L-Plates indefinitely

Good point, and the sense in doing a CBT is reflected in the premium I suspect!

I agree, the CBT is well worth doing and would do me no harm too I think

But she is OK on L's with a car licence anyway surely?
