Find it strange that the earplugs are not working?

I can't hear anything with mine in? and I just use disposable ones nicked from work. Are you sure they are going in right? I find that after you have squished them to put in, just give them a quick dab on wet lips. They should then just slip in and the world should go silent as they crackle and expand. I see numerous people wearing these things hanging out of their ears which is no good.

It's usually the hard yellow ones that people don't get in properly but they are good if in well. The softer ones that look like 'rhubarb n custard' sweets are lower rated (not noticibly) but a lot more comfortable and easier to put in and get out.

Give me a shout if you want me to bring some up next tuesday for you to try if you haven't already.

    Re: Aaaaagh, Wind noise

I have tried a taller screen, great wind protection but horribly noisy so I reverted back to the stock item, removing it is an option as my unfaired Alp doesn't have anywhere near the same level of wind noise as the faired bike.

Duncan, I have tried various types of earplugs with varying degrees of success, it's only when I take them out do I realize that they doing a decent job.

    Oh well

Looks like the solution is to change your lid......and you can knit your ear protection to a thickness of your choice......get down to your nearest knitting shop and hold balls of wool to your head whilst getting the shop assistant to blow really hard next to your ears, obviously a shop with a fan would be even better.

There's your answer. It sounds like a toss up between wind protection and wind noise. I have the same problem on the AT (and I haven't ridden without earplugs for about 10 years or more). Why don't you cut your taller screen down to the size of the standard screen and then just and keep chopping away at it 'til your ears are happy.

    The best solution is .......
Stand 3" away from a Steibel Nautilas horn on full blast.
When it has damaged your hearing so much that you need a Hearing aid then the wind noise will stop being a problem.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

I have really struggled with earplugs (feeling isolated from the traffic when inserted) and had Tinnitus lasting a couple of days after a long ride.
I though I was going to have to splash out some serious money to get some custom made earplugs until a friend gave me a pair of Moldex plugs a week or so ago, they are brilliant! and seem to give me the perfect balance between traffic/Wind noise

    Re: Aaaaagh, Wind noise

I don't really think there is any getting away from wind noise on a motorbike. I have tried big, cut down, and MRA screen with a deflector.

On the TA the cut down one was best for noise - but made for a cold ride in the winter so I put the standard one back on. On the Vara the MRA Vario is best for wind noise - but does have other drawbacks. I reckon an MRA vario on a TA would be good too. I also wear Ultimate Ear custom plugs and they are great. Both bikes very very noisy without the plugs and I wouldn't really want to do a long run without them - Tinnitus was making a comeback about 18months ago and is now more or less gone again.

Phil, you can borrow my cut down TA screen if you like, but you may as well just ride without one for a while for all the difference it makes.

Oh, and my Shoei Hornet Helmet is LOADS quieter than my old Shoei XR1000 with whisper kit AND chin curtain.

    Re: Aaaaagh, Wind noise

I had these EMTEC NOISEBREAKER CUSTOM MADE EARPLUGS through work many moons ago and found them great. Used them for years on two Varaderos with various helmets and still found them OK. When I changed to an FJR the noise became unbearable. After lots of trial and error swaped to foam plugs which I still use on the FJR and my @ noise no longer a problem.
I'm sure I was once told that ears, unlike the rest of the body will continue to grow and change throughout life so if you have a set of custom plugs you need to renew them every 5 years or so.
Was this sales hype? any medics out there?

    Re: Aaaaagh, Wind noise

Phil, sorry you're having problems. I found a combination of things helped. A bigger screen helped, I always have the whisper strip and chin cover on my helmet and ultimate ear plugs.

I tried just about every ear plug on the market and all were either uncomfortable or didn't do a good job. Bespoke earplugs, and I have only ever used ultimate ear plugs, are moulded to fit perfectly and do a fantastic job.

Jonathan had horrendous problems with his screen and he made up his own screen extender. It was an Africa Twin but I'm sure the principles are the same. He cut and shaped the top half of an AT screen, and fitted to the screen on the bike. Worked a treat.

Sounds like the airflow is coming over your screen and hitting you just below or straight onto your helmet. What you probably need to do it just give the airlow a bit more height so it goes over the top of your helmet and you will notice the difference. Unfortunately, it seems to be a problem when you're quite tall

Or get Vanessa to ride and crouch down behind her
