Proposed 100 BHP restriction to Motorbikes in the UK

Sorry if this has already been posted, haven't trawled the threads but apparently the Government feel it better to our health if they reduced Motorbikes to 100 BHP, if you feel they are wrong, let them know by signing the below.

A lot of these seem to be petitions against things that have not actually been proposed.

Have you managed to track down the original proposal that the petition is complaining about?

Yes that's been mentioned on another Forum, TBH, I did not research and in hindsight it does sound like it's just a guy with the hump.

It was proposed - back in 1994 I think. Evidently the proposals haven't got very far.

I take it that no one is proposing a simultaneous restriction of 150 BHP for cars?

Try that one and see how far you get!

It's not a case of whether we can fix it or not - it's more a case of how fixed would you like it?

Petition to: Not allow the draconian proposals to apply power restictions on motorcycles go through.France is the perfect case study, it does not work, training and attitude is what matters. | Number10.gov.uk

My view on this is it shouldn't happen, but on the flip side of that coin in normal road riding how often can you maintain the use of 100bhp.

Ride magazine about a year ago did an article using a GSXr1000 (i think) and had a specific route the bike had a datalogger fitted. They then used someone who just passed there test, a courrier, a clubman racer and a joe public. The clubman racer was fastest and only used around 45bhp average and the person who just passsed there test averaged around 19bhp.

Can't see this one going through the courts they haven't done it with cars, only a voluntary speed restriction of 155mph.

Martin Bangemann very nearly got this brought in the '90's, when the likes of the Kawasaki ZZR1100 and big Triumph (Trophy?) were already self-limited by the manufacturers to 125bhp. France still has 100bhp limit afaik. At the time it was only just thrown out at the very last minute.

A 100bhp limit is just a fanciful figure plucked out of the air, I remember there were loads of studies done which showed no correlation between power and accidents. The entire idea is basically just political posturing and opportunism with no regard to actual facts, absolutely contemptible and sickening

How much HP did the novice use when overtaking? I agree that more than 50bhp is unnecessary when riding alone. When you add in other cars that you need/want to overtake, sometimes uphill, then more is most certainly useful. At the end of the day, though, if someone wants to be an idiot they can do this just as well with 33bhp, 100 bhp or 160bhp. Hell, I was pretty loony with 10bhp on my 125

And yes, 100bhp is a completely fanciful figure. Just like 188mph (300 km/h)

Who are you agreeing with? I don't see anyone else saying that here?

I was generally agreeing with Jasonbc's sentiment rather than backing up a specific point someone made- chances are it's pretty rare you'll use huge amounts of power all the time on a bike. However, as I said there are times where more hp is more than just "handy", it can be the difference between making that overtake and having to sit behind some idiot doing 40mph in a 60 for another 5 minutes.
