The site has enough there to keep people going for ages...you never know where they are until you start to look at the maps.

I was able to view the byeways on the TrailWise site without registering.Click the "Browse maps" button, zoom in to the area you are interested in, then click the "Search for tracks in view" button (not the "Search" button). A circle will appear centred on your display; if that's the right area click the "Search 3km around xxxxx" button.

Please note that some Byeways on TrailWise are derived from the Local Highway Authority definitive map, but some are just taken from the OS map. The OS map might be out-of-date and definitely won't reflect any TROs.

There can also be the odd mistake on OS maps. Local to me there is a footpath through a nature conservation area that was on the OS as a BOAT. The OS have actually put notices up on site explaining their error after complaints from the local authority.
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.
1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!
Followed your instructons it brought up multimap/googlemaps the pink circle came up around the area i selected and it showed no tracks or byeways, tried it for two of my local towns and parishes so i can compare it to my local knoledge and i am far more knolegeable as the map showed nothing for either towns. So still quite dissapointhing will stick to the OS maps.

We have a lane in NW Kent that was an old road that was shown on the list of streets. It was even posted on each end of the route called 'Ifield Road'. It was shown quite clearly as a 'white' road on the OS map.So I started to use it maybe 3-4 times a year and always gave a wave to the farmer adjacent to the lane as we passed through. After a few years of using this lovely little lane we found a notice posted halfway along the lane (in totally the wrong place-it should be at each end of the route) saying that the old road was going to be made into a BOAT.This,as far as the Kent TRF was concerned was going to downgrade the rout. After telling KCC of this they said that it made it easier for people to advise the council about if it was on the definitive map.So we came around to their way of seeing things. But the next version of the OS map to be produced showed it as a bridleway.Unfortunately the OS only change the maps and any updates every 4 years,so any confrontation by other users is bound to cause problems.
In the meantime we've asked KCC to put up a byway sign, which they say that they have. But if they have been, somebody dosn't like it so are removing it.Our next suggestion to KCC has been to install one of those large concrete block 'Public Byway' one that has the top bit painted in red for BOAT.The only problem with these is that locals paint them blue or yellow so as to signify bridleway or footpath. It puts off the amiable but as we all have marked up maps in our group we tend to ignore the signs.
Hi Chris, as most people have said, 'Get a Map'. This is the best way to find the routes you're after and even 5 years on I'm still finding new one's! Just get the O.S. (the red one) map laid out on the floor and get a bright highlighter pen and mark them up. I find this is part of the 'Greenlaning' challenge. I'd try and get a cheap GPS that supports 'Memory Map' as it will show your position on an O.S. map. Don't forget your not 'supposed to do and Rupp's (dot dash in red on the map) but Byways and ones with a red dot (unclassified roads) are fine. Multimap(.com) is OK too as you can select an O.S. map and zoom into 1:25 which is the most accurate map.
have fun!![]()
I tell you what stretchy, the OS map function on multimap is awesome.
With nothing to do at work this is making the hours fly by.
I've already found my next day out in the dales!
Cheers for the tip!
Happy to be of service, I to spend a moment or two whilst at work making plans for my next ride!
If anyone knows of a site with less adverts I'd like to hear from them but it must have the same functionality, i.e. it must zoom into a 1:25 O.S. map as you really need the extra detail to see those hard to find routes.
There are many ways to find lanes but surely the best if finding them yourself and then marking them on an O.S. map.
I'd highly recommend 'Memory Map' which runs on Windows CE devices and if the device has a GPS you'll get a real time fix on an O.S. map; it will even store/show routes too.
