Rosedale Rideouts

This has been partially covered in another thread but warrants its own dedicated section.
If others planning a rideout could add their suggested routes. I reckon two or three road routes & maybe an off road ride would keep numbers managable.
Please keep banter & unnecessary posts to a minimum

I'm happy to lead one or two ride outs if there is enough interest.
Here's a rough itinery, virtually all on smaller roads, at a steady pace, with plenty of stops & doable on any bike. There may be a couple of off road sections - maybe two or three of about a mile long each but there will be an easy road alternative).


Route 1 - Western route, would be something like;

Up Rosedale Chimney, head towards Castleton, drop into Danby bottom to Ainthorpe then Danby,take the track from Danby road end to the Castleton road (where the bus stop/Commondale turning is) - road alternative is along the A171.
From Commondale, left to Westerdale, (there is a route from the top of Guisborough hills that drops down to near Gribdale terrace but not sure of the legality of it....) double back to Kildale & take the dead end road up towards Baysdale (good view).
We could pop into Gt Ayton for a brew/Suggitts ice cream and/or head towards Battersby & Ingleby Greenhow to the carpark/view point at the top of Clay bank, a short pootle down the 'TT', turning off at Chop Gate, heading over the tops towards Carlton (dare we pop in to Lordstones for a brew?) and another great view.
From Carlton, Faceby & Swainby, past Cod Beck Res & Osmotherly (another brew?) & back over the top to Hawnby. From here we can pop back onto the last bit of the 'TT' to Helmsley or pop round by Old Byland & Rievaulx Abbey & visit the White Horse on the Howardian hills (just south of the A170), heading back via Byland Abbey, Wass & Ampleforth - loveley little villages to Helmsley for another brew/fuel up/supplies before heading back to Rosedale.
If theres interest we could take the loop road north of Helmsley via Carlton (the other one!) that ends in Kirkbymoorside before heading back to Rosedale.



Route 2 - Eastern Route, along the lines of;

Out of Rosedale & over the top towards Fryupdale, take a right at Danby Castle & drop into Eskdale to Duck bridge then up to Danby Beacon (short section of off road for those that wish), from Danby beacon road or off road to Lealholm (brew?), a trip round Glaisdale & back to Egton Bridge we could take in Goathland (Heartbeat) & Grosmont (Steam train) & pick up the Stape road across the moors, taking some (easily do able for all) forest track to Levisham & Lockton then gathering in Thornton Le Dale for a brew from there we can either head back to Rosedale or head through Dalby forest (toll), Hackness & the Forge Valley are nice & there are quite a few easily doable forest tracks OR we could have a blatt across the Wolds & a brew at Fridaythorpe then travel along the Howardian Hills (Castle Howard, Hovingham, Gilling etc but this would add quite a bit of mileage)

I'm not sure of the best/most suitable food stops on either of these routes tho.

to be honest places and roads mean nothing to me down here on the south coast, so i'll go along with whatever. all i want to know is how far and what style of road? im for tarmac and the odd bit of gravel and greenlanes, but if its wet or been wet then pure road tyres+250kg bike say no

I'm working on a route that will be tarmac only, roads depend on weather, due to the fact that they have depth posts (so a big no no if heavy rain).

It will be just over 20 miles over the moors into Pickering (i'm gonna scout a place to stop for brew, i know of one but numbers on the ride will limit). Then past the RAF base and into Whitby (Whistlestop is the biker cafe but again numbers on the ride will limit). Then it depends how folk are feeling, we can have a liesurely ride back into Rosedale or if it's still early we can go onto Scarborough where i know we can park MANY bikes comfortably, place for chips and tea etc there too.

I know Derek is looking at roads similar to you Phil, small nadgery roads. Don't anyone be put off by the sound of nadgery roads, i did some with him last Saturday and some of them are an absolute joy to ride, really good roads. So if peeps want to do these roads i'm happy to act as sweeper so no stragglers get lost

I'll be doing a printout of my proposed ride, with mileage etc, and bring it with me, then peeps can see it on a map and decide if they fancy doing it or not.

Anyone fancying doing a bit off off-roading will want to go with Phil, i've seen some of his proposed tracks and although i didn't like the looks of it on Saturday on my bike i'm no off-road guy and others may think it looks fine (i'll try to take some footage and show you).

I was looking at an off road route starting with a long stretch from Kirbymoorside to Commondale, up the road to the t junction then off road to Lealholm on the same route as Phils. Then on to Whitby on the road and time depending round by scarborough and head home.

I have seen some more tracks but havent had time to get up there and reccy them, im away with the caravan to Dorset on Monday but i will get over and do a propper route reccy.

There are only 2 sections that i remember been tricky

1 been this down rocky hill bit.



Second was this water bit.



Nothing to drastic like and some guys did it on road based tyres.

ok ive decided on a route.

It'll be a lot longer than Phils and Dereks, probably 100 miles+

I've done this to keep numbers down otherwise we'd never be able to stop were i'm planning to stop, so the ride will have a limit of 10 (most will want the shorter rides anyway i reckon).

Quick info;

it'll be single track/a road mix

Leave rosedale and do just over 20 miles of single track (tarmac) right over the moors into pickering (this will take about 45 minutes) where we will stop in a nice little place called The Station, parking round the back and you can get food here, tea etc... there is outdoor seating with large parasols for smokers and if you sit inside you can still see the bikes, it's biker friendly

Then we head over to Scarborough along the A170, ride down and past the arcades and stop further up where tea, chips etc can be had if wanted, nice place for fag break and what not.

Then head towards whitby, before getting into Whitby i'll turn so we can park at the Abbey, have 15 minutes or so there and then head down to the sea front, park in the Whistle Stop and then i can show folk where to get Fish & Chips if they want it (was there yesterday and the queues were unbelievable!). The ammount of places to get food and drink here aren't worth mentioning, there everywhere and you can even take a boat ride if you want for about £2.50 or so.

We'll leave here and head along the A171 then double back towards Rosedale going through Castleton and past Blakey Ridge where we will stop for a breather. Then onto Hutton-le-Hole and turn towards Rosedale, down Chimney Bank and back to the campsite.

Should be a good ride out if anyone fancies it, one place is already taken and another possibly, just have to confirm so only 7 places left if anyone likes the sound of it.

Just a quick note to anyone going to Whitby - whether on Craigs ride or not, the boat trip is worthwhile & just past the steps to the Abbey, heading towards the Southern harbour jetty is Fortunes, real oak smoked kippers. mmmm lovely & highly recommended
