    Re: RD04

Which bit of the engine / gear box does the rattle come from?
    I'm going on a trip!

    Re: RD04

I just know that SWMBO wouldn't be impressed but I'm really tempted to take this on as a project. The noise does sound too heavy to be camchain and I'd agree that small ends are likely candidates for the nasty rattle if the cams are looking fine.

Unfortunately that means lots of messing about as the whole motor has to come out and be stripped to get to the rods. I'll make a few phone calls and see what the options and costs are if that's what it is. I'm not sure whether there is enough meat on Africa Twin rods to get the small ends bushed. Anyone else had one of these apart?

Why is it I always manage to find a project at the beginning of summer and finish it just in time for winter??? Something wrong there.

Not that I know too much but dont think its small ends

If it were, from what ive read (not understood mind) unless you intend to do the work yourself, the economic repair is second hand engine.

this is what I budgeted for

    Re: RD04

I would do the work myself, apart from any machining.

I tend to think it's better to rebuild an existing engine and replace anything that is past its best than to risk swapping it with a motor with unknown history (if one can be found).

I'll PM you later after I've done some maths.

    Re: RD04

For what its worth (probably not very much !!)

I cold called at 2 honda dealers to ask if they had any ideas.

Obviously they wouldnt commit to a 100%guaranteed diagnosis but both said it was probably the cam chain tensioner failed and the blade needing replacing ??

As previously stated, my problem is that they quoted me £320 for this but would not guarantee cure

I bought this bike from Airwolf, who also suspected that it was cam chain at the time I purchased it. I priced up replacement, was reasonably happy and bought it. If you need to know more about the bike maybe worth contacting Airwolf as he owned it longer than I have and I think he knows one end of a spanner from the other.

It may well still be this but at the moment cant really afford to have that done only to find it isnt the cure.
