4 stroke road legal trail bike for commuting/offroading (now found!)

    Hello all

Looking for a medium capacity 4 stroke trail bike - probably a Honda XR400 or similar - but I'm open to ideas! [Even considering a CRM250....yes, I know that's a 2 stroke, but meant to be reliable.. or a decent old Tengai/Tenere/Transalp!]

Up to about 600cc. For 70% commuting/20% offroad (for first time!) and 10% tinkering in the garage. But I am a mechanical numpty - so the simpler the bike the better

Budget is about £1500 (maybe £2000 at a push). Cash is burning a hole in my pocket - so give me a call if you have something suitable!!

Age is less important than condition, reliability and originality. I really don't want a bike that's been heavily modified. I'm a fussy old Hector when it comes to standard bikes.

Must be taxed and with a decent length MOT.

My location is Wiltshire, but will travel some distance to find the right bike.

    Andy T.

I'm sure there will be loads of bikes around within your budget this time of year

Thanks for the quick reply - I think I spoke to you briefly in the chatbox last night.

I'm meant to be looking at a CRM250 some distance away early next week - but I am still thinking that really a decent sized 4 stroke thumper would do me - unless anyone can convince me otherwise?

I had a Honda XBR500 many years ago - hoot of a bike. Am I right in thinking that the XR400 has basically the same RVFC engine in it?

CRM250 best allround trail bike made. Out drag an XR600, great on the mud and reliable (I did 12000miles no problems or head off) BUT finding a good one is getting harder and harder as they are getting on now. Mk2,3 and AR best. They are not a motorway cruiser but will skip along at 70mph now and then (on standard gearing). On paper they are not much lighter than an XR but it does feel a lot lighter to ride.

Hi. How does a DR-Z400 appeal? I have one that I use for geen-laning and work on fine days. I was going to ebay it shortly for £1500 - (5 bikes is too many!)

It's a 52 plate, low miles and goes well but not pretty. Of any interest?
