The previous owner was a trained aircraft engineer, accustomed to working with aluminium, and he made them himself for his round-Europe trip earlier this year. First he researched and measured as many commercially-made ones as possible.
The frames are aluminium, and bolt on in a total of about 8 places. The boxes are rivetted rather than welded - as he says, aircraft wings are rivetted, which allows the necessary slight movement to prevent fracturing.
Each pannier bolts on in 3 places. So they're NOT quick release. And the frame is even more fiddly to put on and off. But once in position they are light, strong, and spacious.
If you're interested I'll try to take some photos. Haven't got a clue what to ask for them - so I'll be open to offers.....
cheers - Stewart
I would be very interested in these, assuming Ritz isn't. Please give me first dibs. You could start by joining up and paying your ten quid to join the forum or e mail me at ross@cherrypk.freeserve.co.uk
