TYRES - Tourances rear / trailwing front

After removing the rear wheel earlier and much reading through here and other web sites I have decided that Metzeler Tourances are the way forward - just on the rear for now, as the current front is good for a few more thousand miles.

Can I mix the tourance with the original Trailwing, read on another site that the trailwing is crossply ?? can't see any indication on the tyre as to what make up it is.

The tourances are also slightly larger I believe and tubeless, any issues here?

Going to phone the bikeshop first thing, so any advice would be good..

    Hi Kerr

I have the same setup on my bike. So far it has been fine on and off-road. When the front goes I'll replace it with another Tourance. The tyre has good grip in wet or dry and feels more positive/confident. I'm very happy with it. I paid £75 fitted for mine incl. HOC membership discount from www.superbiketyres.com. They have a few scattered branches in UK. I used Leatherhead branch.
    See pic.

Forgot to mention they are not tubeless. Spoked wheels generally are not tubeless. BMW made theirs tubeless by moving the spokes to the outside of the rim. Good luck finding you're tyre.

Yep, sorry what i meant was the tourances were designed for tubeless wheels, and the TA being tubed, any issues.....just fit the inner tube I expect..

Just found this cached version of a post a few years back, which answers more questions

No problem with tubeless tyres in a spoked rim as long as you've got tubes fitted! It's exactly what I'm running at the minute.

Quite a few trail-type tyres are radial rear/crossply front (including the Trailwing TW101/152 combi and even the Tourances although I might be wrong there). So it seems this is "normal"

Mixing Trailwing front and Tourance rear shouldn't be a problem, except maybe that the Tourances are grippier in the wet. So when you are in a brave mood heading for new cornering speed-records in the rain don't wait until signs of the rear breaking out because the front will probably go sooner. I thought you might wanted to know this in case you had plans to participate in Grand Prixs

    HI

I'm running a tourance rear and trailwing front, and agree with the post above!

The rear tyre has loads of grip leaving the front a little skitty but it is fine so long as the pressures are right.

I also upped the preload slighty (3 turns CW) to give me an intermediate setting for pillion on/off riding and it gave it a little more feel when solo.

My advice is go for it just take it easy the first few trips until you get used to it.

    Thanks all..

Bugger the expense (and the fact that the guy in the bike shop persauded me) but she's having a fullset of tourances now ....

Got both wheels off the bike now (suprised how easy that was) dropping them off tomorrow, should get them back on after work ..
