Thread: Clutch question

    Clutch question

I've a July 2004 Transalp & am back on the road with it after a £1,750 accident damage repair, you should have seen the car.... but that's another story.

Anyway, I'm not convinced about the clutch action (It was like it before the accident so the repairs havn't caused it).

When the engine has warmed up the clutch sort of lets go after the initial slip when moving off and produces a jerk (sometimes worst than others). It's as though you have just let go of the clutch lever before the clutch is fully engaged.

It often does it on the changes between the lower gears.... change up, put a bit of power on as you release the clutch and you get a jerk as the clutch bites.

The dealer recons the clutch is OK when he tested it but I'm not convinced.

    Anyone ever experienced this ??

Yes, mine does that little "jerk" as well, when starting to let go of it in first, and it´s only about 4000km old since the first one was changed (my fault), the first one also did the "jerk".

Interesting ..... It had 1,800 miles on the clock when I bought the bike, I've doubled that to 3,600 miles in 18 weeks, perhaps the clutch matures with age ??

Even my wife knows by know to hang on at the lights till we are in 2nd. Some days are better than others but I think that's just my riding. I sometimes feel sorry for the clutch as it feels like I'm abusing it but it's not me. The only way I found is to slip the clutch well into the first gear. Obviously not recommended and I've learnt to live with it.

It's the tangs on the clutch basket, they've got grooves worn into them so the last part of the clutch movement jerks as you let the lever out. I got it on AT number 2 at about 70,000 miles so if you've got a low mileage AT it may have been clocked. I've also had it on my DR350. The proper cure is to replace the basket (part is mega pounds) but on number 2 AT and my DR I just filed the groves out (well bevelled them anyway) and it cured it. The AT was doing it again by 110,000 miles but I couldn't be bothered to have another delve (it's a pig of a job) so i just rode around it, no fast pullaways where it really notices etc.
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

    Thanks for the replies.

I'd pretty well decided to 'live with it' already.

Mileage certified @ 1,800 when I bought it from a main dealer who had sold it and taken it back in PX.

Condition of the bike confirmed the mileage anyway, I think the only water the bike had seen was when it was washed.

The previous owner traded it for a R1200RT... he either had grander aspirations for touring or just got pissed off with the clutch!!!!!

I would be very surprised if your clutch basket was worn on such low mileage, are you sure the cable adjustment is right, cable isn’t bound , bearings etc.
It sounds like your dealer is fobbing you off, any bike with a wet clutch should have a smooth action. It really is one of the simpler things on a Honda.

I think this clutch problem could be an oil related,
    check out http://www.castrol.com/castrol/gener...tentId=7019820

Can people with he problem let us know what oil brand and grade they are using

I´ve used Castrol GPS and I´m on my second change of don´t know what semi-synth Silkolene, I think the Silkolene makes the box a bit less clunky in the first half of the oil´s life, that´s the only change I notice from the Castrol.
