New to site, guidance needed on Transalp vs AT

New to the site and looking for guidance on Transalp...I have asked the same of the AT forum and got loads of helpful feedback. Do they share the same probs? T/Alp may suit me better as a handy second bike to keep my Valkyrie company.
More importantly are there any local owner groups/meets in or near Peak District/Derbyshire?
    Thanks in anticipation
    Mick

get one of each!! no problem then!

I am in Hoyland/Barnsley so give me a bell in september if you get sorted.

    Good luck dude.

You will be pleased with eithér as a hack bike i'm sure. They are not rocket ships but bags of character and fun on the twistys!

Thinking about it there is a nice looking TA 600 in Manhatton at the mo in Sheffield. Just past Ponds Ford furniture place.

    Both good..

key discission making criterion would be inside leg measurement

    Alps are still made ( 650 )

    Africa twins discontinued

Both are capable on and off road with the AT being more offroad Biased ( the Alp is actually better as its lighter )

AT has the more adventure looks and the bigger tank, seat ( wood)

like I said both very capable

The Africa Twin is a Tranny in a Matalan shellsuit, plus an added fuel pump, oil cooler and a scaffolding plank for a seat.

    Hi and welcome

    Both are good bikes.

An AT is no quicker than an Alp 650, they're bigger and heavier the fuel pump can give issues as can the rectifier and corroding brake calipers. Ironically these these don't seem to be such an issue on the Alp - the Alp doesn't have a fuel pump.

I think it's fair to say most AT owners buy for the more agressive looks - which is fair enough

The AT was discontinued from Honda's lineup some years ago, wether this is an advantage or not is up to you!

For the record I'm on me 3 1/2 Alp - with other bikes in between, never been tempted with an AT for some reason.
You will also get a better/newer Alp for the same money, what is your budget?

As for meetups, I occasionally meetup with Paul (24lb) for a camping weekend/runout in Derbyshire and there is the ocasional meet at Squires near Tadcaster which can draw members from afar, I'm happy to discuss the finer points of Alp ownership if you want more info

I'm on my third TA - tried out a very tidy, reasonably priced Africa Twin that a mate was selling - really wanted it, but I hated it! Seat is awful, the screen wasn't great, didn't like the clocks/idiotlights and it's too tall. I do like the look of the Africa Twin but love the ride of my TA.......

Thanks for all this info...sound like a TA is the way forward at the moment (still thinkin though Taz). Is the 650 better..if so why...when did they change. Suppose all this info is available on the site but that would spoil the fun....Cheers again

well...i had a '97 600 TA for 3 years. did 34,000 miles (trouble free), then sold it and got a TDM 900. what a mistake. have this evening just bought exactly the same bike on ebay (beige, '97 600, 12,000 miles, mint) can't wait to get back on one.
Africa Twin is nice but I prefer the TA.
