    Side pannel removal help

    2006 TA
I have taken off 3 fairing fasteners, 2 screen screws, 2 cockpit screws, 2 screws under the headlight and one bolt from the side of the side fairing.
I can pop the rubber thing that hold the side panel on but I can't get the front of the side panel to come away.
    Help

have you removed the black plastic guards in front of the radiator grills?
These are attached the the side panels and you need to take them off as well.

Have you removed the screws that sit above the plastic headlamp surround?
These secure the tops of the side panels to the headlamp surround.
There should be a screw fixed horizontally and a bolt fixed vertically, on each panel.

I hope this help, good luck, once these screws/bolts have been removed then the side panels will simply pop loose from the headlamp surround.

I just removed the plastic fasteners from the black plastic guards in front of the radiator grills, do I have to remove the guards completely ?

re the screws that sit above the plastic headlamp surround.

I took out the 2 screen screws but can't see the bolt, do I have to strip something else off before I can see them?

This is what I have to undo /remove on my 2001 TA (roughly in order) and from memory:

    1. 4 screws inside the cockpit that hold the clock surround - one hosizontal, 1 vertical each side. One of these is a self tapper (horizontal I think).

    2. 1 Plastic screw inside the fairing panel each side - under handlebars / down by fork legs. Only 1/2 turn needed. Now remove clock surround and put somewhere safe.

    3. 4 Screen Screws - screw into well nuts (rubber nuts set inside a rubber "boot" - the boot expands to fill the gap between screen and fairing). Now remove screen and put somewhere safe.

    4. Sit next to front wheel and look up in to fairing. Lots of those black plastic screws holding on a stone guard each side and an inner fairing panel on each side. Undo them all. remember only half a turn and then they should be able to pull out. Watch out for the "nut" end falling out and for the nut end turing as you try and undo. I am sure there is a proper name for these type of fasteners.

    5. Undo the allen bolt fasteners at the fairing sides.

    6. Undo the two 8mm bolts (vertical) that removal of the screen will have revealed.

    7. Unclip the electical connections to the headlight, side light and each indicator.

    8. Pop the stud/grommet at each fairing side (I spray with WD40 or silicon stuff).

    9. Wiggle the whole fairing forwards and pull away from the bike.

    10. You should have a pocketful of fasteners (I thinks it's 2.

    11. Reinstallation is the reverse.

With practice about 10mins to remove and 10-15mins to re-fit. I don't bother with the stone guards any more.

good luck - you will get used to it.

Just wait 'til you have to remove the tank as well!!

As above. Unlike the 600 you can't just remove one side. The whole fairing needs unbolting from the front subframe, lights disconnecting and lift the whole front off. It may be possible to take a side off before but I've never tried. At least the whole thing is light as the headlight is featherweight compared to the old one.

Have you removed the screen from the fairing? If so, then you should see two black rubber stoppers; these are used to support the screen. Remove these stoppers and then you should see the two bolts and the two screws.

Thanks all for comments. I shall wait until weekend for some daylight and give it a go.
I was trying to remove the side panel on its own, from your answers, that is the problem.
    Thanks again.

Christ! No wonder it costs so much for servicing! That works out to be about 2-3 hours labour if you account for fag and w*nk breaks from the engineer's point of view!
