    Wheels

What wheels fit the Transalp XLV600?

As well as my 96 @ I now also have my mates XLV600 (87) which has a worn out rear wheel which is beyond any economical repair. I know spare ones are as rare as rockin horse poo, and are likely to be pretty worn too so what are my options?

Plus, (don't laugh) I'm having wacky ideas about making a bit of a motard of it for occaisional summer use. I know for a fact that CBR600 wheels fit the transalp cause I once followed a geezer after who'd fitted a pair.

He didn't go into detail just saying the CBR600 wheels were more or less a straight forward fit. Can't recall if it was the early or later TA as this was about ten years ago.

Anyway the bikes pretty good apart from the wheels which are both a bit knackered with the engine being rock solid.

    Any info' much appreciated.

Don't think it will be the very early CBR. Got a pair of these in the garage as I was having a similar idea to yourself.
The front looks as though it will go in with a change of bearings and some spacers made up.
Rear has a problem with the disk size and mounting holes. Can't use CBR disk as it is too small and can't fit larger disk ( I was looking at AT stuff) as there are only 3 mounting holes on the wheel and the AT disk has 4.
So without a major mod the rear is a nono.
The later wheel from a CBR may be different, but havn't got that far yet.

Have seen an AT on Fleabay with what the guy thought to be 750 wheels, but he wasn't sure.

    Anyone else tried this?

The problem is the rear is a drum up to the early 90s. The early Dominator wheel is the same I think (different sprocket though - could affect the hubb). Fitting later wheels would probably need the swing arm updating and a rear caliper/master cylinder + brake pedal.

I had the same problem and asked the same question.......ended up going to http://www.hagon-shocks.co.uk/HagWheel.htm and it cost me about £250 all in.....for the rear rim rebuild (gold anodised) and £64 for the BT45 on the back.

Worth it though for peace of mind!

    Cheers Geezers.

My 87' TA of course has a 'drum' rear brake and so I suppose unless I want to do a major modification I'd better find another rear 'drum' wheel or go to Hagon like badger suggests to get one made up. The Dominator rear wheel fits then does it?

What about spoked front wheel options? Fitting a CBR or similar front wheel would look crap with a rear spoked wheel so any idea what 'fat' spoked front wheels would fit?

The dominator front is definitely interchangable (I've done it), and of course any TA up to the late nineties when the wheel grew an extra disk. I don't know about this, but I would expect the smaller and wider front from the SLR650/Vigor might fit, but that's a guess.

It's a shame about the rear, because if you could pick up the parts it would be worthwhile changing to the disc. The drum was prone to losing its internal 'roundness', and mine periodically needed a good clean because the dust accumulates and makes it squeak! It might be a little lighter though, and it has to be said that the drum is no worse than the disc for braking power.

    Cheers again.

Is the Dommie front smaller than the TA? If not then apart from availability there not much point is fitting one if I'm looking to do a bit a a motard job.
