    FITTING HANDELBAR RISERS

Hello all, this is my first entry so go easy on me. I am fitting 50mm risers to help ease a bad back. I found that front flexible brake pipe is now 50 mm short of course. Can i buy a stock longer pipe or were can i get one made?

    2002 transalp blue fairly standard

merry christmas to all from Ireland.

    Hi Philip, welcome!

I did a similar thing, with bars not risers, but found both clutch and brakes cables/hose far too short. Local bike shops can make new clutch with the old cable, dead easy, as for brake hoses, I converted to full braided hose, and remaoved all the solid lines etc, from Earls, via local shop, for just under £35. Every thing else fits, but the throttle cable is a bit tight.

The braided hose do seem to make a differance, any way its a "must do" mod!

    Cheers, and Happy Crimbly.

    Risers

What do you think the maximum you can raise the bars with out having to get new cables?

I'm pretty sure you can do about 5cm/2" without needing cables etc. The test to do (that I didn't ) would be to undo the bars and lift them up to see how far it will go without over staining things. Possibly even use a heap of cardboard as the riser to get the height you want.
(Don't forget to try the bars at both full locks too )

ref the braided hose conversion - what is the format for changing over to braided hoses? Easy job? Are connections included? How much for both front and rear lines? I have a 1994 600

    Thanks

I bought a pair of front lines from HEL for my 650 (both run direct from the master cylinder to the callipers, as opposed to a standard 3-line system that would have one line down from the master cylinder, splitting into two around the bottom yolk) and they cost £58 delivered. Unfortunately they were about a foot too long each side, so I gave them precise measurements which they promised to match, but then sent me two more lines that were not only completely the wrong length (again) but had the wrong banjo fittings as well.

I'm waiting for them to get back to me.....

Fitting them is no different to fitting standard lines. What's included in the kit may depend upon where you order from but the HEL ones come with everything you need (except brake fluid!) - stainless banjo bolts, copper washers etc. As for whether it's easy, that depends on how confident you are stripping and re-assembling brake components and then bleeding the system, but there's nothing particularly clever involved.

I ordered from HEL partly because they were cheaper than Touratech and offered faster delivery (probably much faster) but also because they offered the lines with a black PVC coating, but there are a number of places you can buy them. Goodridge do them, as do several Goodridge-approved agents, accessory shops etc etc. On my experience so far I wouldn't recommend HEL, though......

My Earl ones are the same as sproggys, with 2 lines direct from the master cylinder to the caliper. They fit with an extra long fitting to the master cylinder, that I was a little worried about at first, for impact damage, but they have survived perfectly! I ordered 4" over length to fit my heightened 'bars, perfect size came back, and covered with black PVC too. For £35 delivered, via my local bike shop (AGT in Leighton Buzzard), you can't go far wrong!

I've only done the front, is the '94 twin or single disc? Sinle line should be much cheaper - half the price??

Thanks folks - much appreciated. My 94 model has single disc front only, which appears adequate, but doubtless the rear is used more than if it had twin disc set up. Any merits in changing the rear over to braided as a result?
