Advise for a new owner , PLEASE

    Hello folks,

New bike rider here (What mid life crisis!!) and new Transalp owner, woohooo love that bike.

Now for the advise bit... I have ordered a set of Givi Engine bars for my new baby (cos I'm soo new and likely to drop it ). Are there any problems I should be looking out for when I fit them? Thanks

    Hello higgo,

Welcome to the site ! Ditto on the TA. Also my first bike, and yes I dropped it few times and wished I had fitted some engine bars sooner. When I got round to fitting some 'givi' crash bars to my 1996 TA, I had no real problems. Although, the fitting instructions are pretty well useless.

    Cheers!

    Billy

Hi Higgo, Welcome mate you'll love it in here.

I have a set of touratech crashbars fitted, that are fitted at higher points on the bike than the Givi ones.

I looked at Givi bars when I was trying to decide , but from memory, I think there was a problem fitting both the Givi bars and a centre stand.

So as long as you don't have a centre stand fitted it should be straightforward. Not sure if this helps or adds to your worries !!!

    I have a house , but I can't guarantee it's safe !!

    Hi and welcome.

Apart from the best bike( ), engine bars are the next most important thing!

    Don't mention Piccys!
I've just spent some time trying to upload my "This mornings 2 crashes" photos to illustrate how good engine bars are and I can't. My photos are 2 big, and I've no photo editing s/ware on this computer.

Anyway, as I've said before, crash bars are the first "must do" mod for a TA, swiftly followed by a proper under-engine guard.

Ooops , I didn't tell you anything about the bike. Well its a 1990 (old) transalp in Red and White. Top Box and panniers are by "Nonfango". There is a centre stand fitted so I may have problems with the Givi engine guards
Its currently running on Dunlop TrailMax tyres but not the D605's mentioned on the forum.

    welcome

I fitted the Motad ones, they are beefier , fixing is a bit different but the best advice I can give is to fit all up loose first, then tighten from the front after centering the bars so the gaps between the bars and panels are equal.

Have to agree they are a must.. dropped it twice on the way down from the Col-de Sommiel ( the Stella ) into rock and was able to get out from under it with ease, no damage to me and a wee bit off paint of the RH bars.. was fortunate to do the same side both times

Car drivers tend to give you a bit more room too..

hope you don't need to them

    have a good new year

I have givi bars on my transalp..........took them to my honda dealer and had them fitted, when they did the first service at 600 miles.
Only thing i have found with the givi engine bars.........is that you do tend to scrap em goin round corners..........and you can have trouble fitting them, if you have a centre stand fitted.......other than that......they are great for restin ya feet on, when ya doin a few miles and legs start to ache.....or is that just me................

My only comment is, if fitting them yourself is to make sur you torque up the bolts especially at the engine mountings, some Vara riders have noticed a lot of vibration and weaving if it is not done!
