    jerky speedo problem

Think this has been mentioned before but can't see a way of searching just the transalp forum?? Anyway my speedo seems like it's on it's last legs. Was riding today and it was OK to start with then the needle started bouncing all over the place before finally resting around zero. Stopped for a while and when I got riding again the thing started working momentarily before it went back to zero again. So I'm guessing cable must be OK otherwise it wouldn't be registering at all?

Does this sound like the gear mechanism in the front wheel that has broken? Can they be repaired or am I probably looking at new parts?

    Cheers

The inner (drive) cable is probably broken. But you cannot buy just an inner , you have to buy the whole cable assembly. It's a fairly easy job to do yourself , just a philips screwdriver for the wheel end and a thumb screw (although you probably need plyers ) for the clock end. Last time I bought one it was for a Pan European , but they are all pretty much the same , I think it was about £15 ????.

    I have a house , but I can't guarantee it's safe !!

Something not disimilar happened to mine shortly after I got it. It turned out to be a plastic cog/ring thing in the front wheel mechanism which had broken. It was fixed under warranty and it only took about 20 minutes to do ( by two bike blokes). I collected the bit from a parts agent for them and it only looked about 10 bob's worth.

Hi Slimjim the nylon cog in the drive usually breaks , Also inside the drive is a washer with two prongs that stick out to engage the Nylon cog. When the nylon cog breaks it normally bends the prongs so that they do not engage anymore . If you are able to remove the front wheel " don,t know if you are able to " if not Remove the speedo cable before it breaks , The cable is around £10 the nylon cog if you can get it on its own is about the same or you might have to buy the washer and DRIVE as well about £50 . Dave silver spares in the links section i think they sell the nylon cog on it,s own. ALSO when you put it back together be sure to use the proper grease AS common or garden grease will make the nylon brittle and break in no time . I don,t remember the name for the Propper Grease but i am sure that some good soul will post up the name of it. fw750x

Thanks guys. I think it probably is the speedo gear cogs as I vaguely recall a slight grinding sound coming from the front but couldn't really locate it - never ignore an unusual sound eh! So I'll order the parts and get onto it at the weekend.

Now what do people use for grease as I never know what type I should buy!

    Cheers

Hi Slimjim i just searched through the forums you need to use White Lithum Grease , You should be able to get it from a motor factors / Halfords / or scrounge some from your friendly dealer , Make sure you clean out the drive first as it gets clogged up with yucky gunge. fw750x
